TikTok Users Are Doing The '2016 Vs. 2021' Makeup Challenge To Show How Much Trends Change

We all know that beauty trends often come and go. What was popular back in 2016 is pretty much out now. However, it would be fun to look back at what the beauty craze was back then compared to today.

Well, that seems to be the topic of the latest TikTok beauty challenge. So let's see what it's all about. Shall we?

I love stumbling upon fun TikTok videos.

And my favorite ones are beauty tutorials. I'm not going to lie, I need a lot of help in that department, hee, hee. Somehow, I don't think I was born with that "talented makeup application" gene.

As I said earlier, the latest TikTok beauty challenge has me very interested.

The challenge is called #2016vs2021, and the premise is quite simple. The videos show you step-by-step makeup routines that beauty junkies used to do in 2016 compared to today's trends.

But the kicker is that they're using their faces like a split-screen.

So on one side, they show you the makeup trends from 2016 and on the other today's trends. Oh, my. Isn't that totally genius of them, huh?

Let's take a look at a few of these interesting makeup fads.

Do you remember when it was all about the Kim Kardashian-inspired contouring? Ugh! I honestly never got into that — I'm too lazy, ha, ha! How about you? Did you do it, too?

On the same token, back in 2016, everybody went overboard with their bronzer.

Or is it just me who thinks so? I love glowing skin as much as the next person but some folks took it to the next level, no?

I'm all for feeling glamorous, and there was a point where I went crazy for glitter eye shadow.

Those days are long gone now. Instead, today I opt for a little shimmer on my eyes, and that suits me just fine.

And who can forget heavy baking?

What the heck was that all about, huh? Did you ever jump on that bandwagon? I'm happy to report that I did not. Honestly, in my opinion, this look was way too heavy, at least for my delicate skin.

Big and bold eyebrows sure were a thing back in 2016.

But I'm so glad to see this trend go. Instead, I'm a lot more at ease doing the soap brows technique. I think it looks that much more natural and softer.

So are you team 2016, or do you love the current trends from 2021 so far?

I definitely prefer today's softer and more natural looks. The heavy makeup never suited me — especially since I hardly ever wear any these days.
