DIYers Are Creating Psychedelic Patterns With An Ice Dyeing Hack

If you haven't noticed already, the '70s are back in a big way.

Bell bottoms, those curtain bangs everyone is getting lately. And now, tye dying.

While you could go the traditional route, crafty TikTokers have been using a new technique: ice dyeing. The results are a psychedelic dream you won't want to wake up from!

Ice dyeing is exactly as it sounds: covering fabric with ice and then sprinkling dye on top.

What you get is a gorgeous mottled watercolor look that goes great with anything.

This includes jeans, sweatshirts, shorts, scrunchies, and so much more.

Here's the process in action from TikToker @dyesigns.

They decided to ice dye a crewneck, starting with scrunching the shirt up real tight.

This is so you can place elastic bands all over to keep everything in place.

From there, place the tied-up crewneck into a bucket of some sort (this will prevent any spills or stains).

You'll then take enough ice to cover the whole fabric. Note that different ice sizes will actually result in different patterns.

Now comes the fun part: sprinkling dye overtop!

You can get as creative as you'd like.

This TikToker used the colors eggplant, marigold, burgundy, and orange sorbet. You'll want to let the ice melt through completely after that and then dry in either the microwave or sun.

So cool! And so easy to make, as evident by the many other DIY TikTokers who gave this clever hack a try.

This TikToker used ice dye to create a spiral design on a sweatshirt.

Another used the hack to create a matching set of ice dyed clothes.

Eager to try this trend out yet? Maybe this rainbow-colored spiral blanket will do the trick. Or this majorly psychedelic t-shirt that gives all the '70s vibes.

Don't have ice ready? No problem. Use snow!

This idea was used by TikToker @fancyvelveeta who decided to tye dye a plain white t-shirt.

She began by spiraling the t-shirt, tying it with elastic bands, and then using snow to cover the shirt instead of ice.

That same TikToker even created ice cubes made out of dye.

This would make the process a bit easier (and prettier!).

According to her tutorial, you simply place dye into an ice cube tray, let it freeze, and then begin the ice dying process (minus sprinkling on more dye).

Here's another psychedelic pattern to get you pumped up to try this DIY hack.

If you get good enough, you could even sell your creations, like many users on the app do!
