10+ Awkward (And Iconic) Moments From The 2021 Grammys

The Grammys are always an interesting time.

Fans get to watch as their favorite artists get all dressed up, accept awards, and even perform. But in the midst of all this fun, there are a LOT of awkward moments.

This year's award show is no exception, especially with COVID-19 safety precautions put into place.

So without further adieu, here are 10+ awkward (and wonderful) moments from the 2021 Grammys.

1. When Lizzo swore on national TV.

This happened when she presented the award for Best New Artist. She also struggled with opening the envelope.

In her defense, it had been a long time since she'd done any sort of presenting due to the pandemic.

While the Grammys probably didn't appreciate Lizzo's swear, Megan Thee Stallion sure did.

She laughed so much, Lizzo called her out, saying,

"Megan, stop laughing at me," before announcing Meg as the award's winner. Iconic!

2. When Megan Thee Stallion kept getting interrupted by a car during her acceptance speech.

First, Lizzo's mishap with Best New Artist and now this. That's what happens with the Grammys being outside, we guess.

But instead of letting it ruin her moment, she called it out. Queen!

3. When DaBaby's backup singers got *really* into their performance for "Rockstar."

The "DaBaby boomers," as host Trevor Noah called them, were a group of women of older women in robes.

They totally stole the show by giving it their all!

4. Harry Styles' colorful boas.

By now, we're used to the singer's wonderful fashion sense.

For the evening, he rocked not one but two colorful boas. He wore a green one while performing "Watermelon Sugar" and then a purple one while accepting Best Pop Solo.

5. When Billie Eilish won Record of the Year and tried to give her award to Megan Thee Stallion.

"This is really embarrassing for me," Billie said when accepting her award.

"You deserve this," Billie said, addressing Megan. Honestly, we all teared up.

"You had a year that I think is untoppable."

"You are a queen. I want to cry thinking about how much I love you."

She then dedicated her award to the rapper. "Can we just cheer for Megan Thee Stallion, please?"

6. When technical difficulties ruined The Strokes' first Grammy win.

Since the feed cut out right as the winner was announced, they didn't know who won.

This led to them asking who won when they should have already been celebrating!

7. When Taylor Swift was searching for camera locations during her performance.

Yes, it was only six seconds, but it was still hilariously awkward.

Thankfully, her amazing performance of THREE of her recent hit songs, is what we remember most.

8. When Harry Styles' speech kept cutting cut.

No one knew why, but people wanted to hear what he said since he was accepting his first-ever Grammy.

This original video then proved that he pulled a Lizzo and kept dropping the F-bomb.

9. When Beyoncé showed up out of nowhere.

While she was nominated several times, no one knew for sure whether she would show up.

So it was hilariously awkward when the camera suddenly panned to her while announcing one category she was nominated in.

Bey's appearance was such a surprise, not even Megan Thee Stallion knew she was there!

That was more than apparent when she made this face to seeing her from across the room when she went up to accept the award for Best Rap Song.

10. When Bad Bunny grooved out to Dua Lipa's performance.

Looks like Taylor Swift doesn't have the monopoly on dancing to other stars at award shows!

Viewers got to watch as Bad Bunny did some sort of body roll. It was pretty hilarious.

11. When host Trevor Noah stopped Beyoncé and Megan Thee Stallion from leaving the stage.

Bey had taken one step down when Trevor stopped them.

He announced that Beyoncé had just made history by tying the most Grammy wins ever by a female.

12. The intro song for every category was way too serious.

Like, this is not the Oscars, people!

Serious music wasn't needed on a night that is known for being light and fun. This made the vibe seem totally off.

13. When Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion performed "WAP."

Let's be real: we all know what WAP stands for. They can change the lyrics to "west and gushy," but we know the truth.

So that's why it was hilarious to see the ladies attempt to perform a PG version of the song.

14. When comedian Bill Burr mispronounced the name of the Best Regional Mexican Music Album winner, Natalia Lafourcade.

You had one job!

“I can’t say the name. The Grammy goes to Natalia Lafourcade,” he said, apologizing profusely.

That wasn't the only time he felt the "burrn" that night.

A less wonderful moment was when he made a controversial joke while presenting the award for Best Tropical Latin Album.

“Feminists are, like, going nuts," he joked, adding that people are going to wonder, “Why is the cis-white male doing all this Latino stuff?”

15. Just the vibe in general.

It's hard to put a finger on it, but the Grammys last night was just super awkward last night.

Maybe it was the event being outside, the Zoom acceptance speeches, or something else.

16. Billie Eilish performing on top of a sinking car.

I have nothing but respect for Billie Eilish. She sings like a siren and has a long prosperous career ahead of her.

That said, many onlookers were likely incredibly confused as to why she chose to perform on the roof of a partially stage-submerged muscle car?

This was done in an attempt to recreate the ambiance from Billie's music video.

Throughout the video for "Everything I Ever Wanted," Billie and her brother/producer Finneas are driving through the city in the same type of car that we see on the stage.

17. When Megan Thee Stallion won "Best New Artist."

Megan Thee Stallion had a year for the record books. She's only the second female hip-hop artist in history to win the award for the category.

The first to do so was the iconic Lauryn Hill.

18. When Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak blew the roof off with their performance of "Leave The Door Open."

Did Bruno and Anderson have the performance of the night? It's certainly debatable.

Either way, after watching them absolutely own the stage — I can't wait for their forthcoming album!

19. Mickey Guyton making history performing "Black Like Me."

Mickey Guyton made history at the Grammys by becoming the first Black female solo artist to ever be nominated in a Country Music category.

Her performance was powerful, evocative, and absolutely mesmerizing.

20. H.E.R. winning "Song Of The Year."

The track that secured H.E.R. the win was titled "I Can't Breathe" and it was inspired by the tragic and senseless loss of life of both George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.

Securing the win was an incredible statement for social justice.

21. When Post Malone creeped out the entire audience while performing "Hollywood Is Bleeding."

Did anyone else think that Post Malone was trying to channel the spirit of former WWE superstar The Undertaker with his performance?

The only thing stranger than his outfit was that incredibly creepy accompanying choir.

22. Lil Baby's incendiary performance of "The Bigger Picture."

I resisted for a long time, but after watching Lil Baby absolutely scorch the stage at the Grammys, I'm now convinced — he's the real deal.

The pageantry of the performance combined with his syncopation and vocal talent is staggering.

23. Anderson .Paak and Bruno Mars' tribute to Little Richard.

Little Richard was one of the founding fathers of Rock n' Roll.

He was renowned for his high-pitched "woo," his electric piano chops, and without his influence music quite frankly wouldn't be where it is today.

Almost a year ago exactly, Little Richard succumbed to a lengthy battle with bone cancer.

In order to give thanks and pay tribute, Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak appeared on stage for a second time to perform Little Richard hits like "Long Tall Sally" and "Good Golly Miss Molly."

24. Doja Cat's leather-clad techno themed rendition of "Say So."

I'm not even embarrassed to admit that I was absolutely obsessed with this song.

Be honest: how many of you tried and failed to make a TikTok dance video once you heard it?

25. Taylor Swift winning for "Folklore".

Watch Taylor as soon as she hears the news that she's won.

After she gets up and removes her mask, Taylor does this awkward 'secret handshake' type of move with the person sitting next to her.

And can we talk about that dress for a moment?

I'm really not trying to be rude but it looks like Taylor got into a fight with a flower bed and lost.

What's even crazier is that the dress probably cost upwards of $10,000. I don't get rich people.

26. BTS light it up like "Dynamite."

Of all the things that North America has embraced over this past decade, a love and appreciation for K-Pop rank high among my favorites.

In totally unsurprising fashion, BTS stole the show all the way from a rooftop in Seoul, South Korea.

27. Taylor Swift's rustic aesthetic comes to life on stage.

The overall set designs this year were out of this world. Every single performing artist took things to a new level and constantly raised the bar as the night went on.

None more so than Taylor who performed all of her tracks from inside a cozy forest cottage.

All in all, it was a pretty incredible year in music.

This year at the Grammys was one of the most diverse and eclectic that we've seen in years.
