Brooklyn Nine-Nine fans are in for some sad news today — the dog who played Cheddar, Captain Holt’s beloved Corgi, has crossed over the rainbow bridge at 13 years years old. While there have been multiple dogs in the role, Stewart the Corgi has held the title the longest.
On Monday, Stewart’s owner took to his Instagram page to announce the sad news.
“My precious boy Stewart crossed the rainbow bridge today,” the post started. “We went to the beach (his favorite place) where he frolicked in the surf and then enjoyed a picnic lunch of In & Out Burgers.”

“We relaxed in the sun and just enjoyed each other’s company.”
The post continued, “Our veterinarian met us there later and Stewart went to sleep peacefully in my arms while listening to the sounds of the ocean. He was a one in a million kind of dog. He was my supaah staah.”
Stewart’s owner had once given a behind-the-scenes interview about his famous pup.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly , Stewart’s owner revealed they are a professional dog trainer, specifically for acting purposes, so most of Stewart’s training had been, “the movie basics, and we mold and remold every job we do.”
Some tricks Stewart had to learn were unique.
Like when Captain Holt had Cheddar run through the vents to retrieve a plaque during the show’s Season 4 Halloween special.
The pup was a delight on set, and fit in well with the cast.
In true Jake Peralta style, Stewart’s owner said that Stewart “does feed off the energy of the set, so if he does make a mistake and there’s a reaction, he will make the mistake over and over again just because he can get the laugh.”
Executive producer on the show Dan Goor told a story highlighting Stewart’s knack for comedy.
He said, “In the episode where Gina and Terry try to boost Captain Holt’s social media presence by making Instagram pictures of Cheddar, there is a scene where Holt gives a moving speech filled with gravitas about honor and duty.”
Stewart found a way to add his own flair to the scene.
Goor continued, “Every time he began that monologue, Cheddar, who was just off screen, would let out a soft, unending howl, which cracked up everyone on set. Every time.”
Stewart’s younger sister, Stella, has taken over the role of Cheddar.
Due to Stewart’s age, Stella took over the role of Cheddar, making her small screen debut two months ago.
Stewart was 13 years old.
