Bill Murray Admits That He Misjudged Selena Gomez: "I Enjoyed Her Very Much"

Turns out Bill Murray is a big Selena Gomez fan — although, he never thought he would be.

He admitted that he had some reservations about pop-stars in general, but was pleasantly surprised by his impression of Selena.

Selena Gomez and Bill Murray seem like an unlikely pair on paper.

Sure, they're both famous. But their paths crossing doesn't spring to mind that easily.

Bill and Selena are starring in the film "The Dead Don't Die" together.

Alongside Adam Driver, Tilda Swinton, Steve Buscemi, and many others.

They all attended the Cannes Film Festival in support of the film.

Fans could not believe their eyes when they saw Bill sensually whispering something in Selena's ear and wrapping his arm around her waist.

The internet couldn't handle it.

I couldn't handle it.

Rumors immediately began circulating that Bill Murray and Selena Gomez were an item.

This wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. But it was definitely a shock?

Fans patiently waited for either parties to shut the rumors down and explain that they were nothing more than friends.

There had to be some kind of reasonable explanation — not that I would be opposed to them dating, more power to them if they are...?

Just initially seemed inconceivable.

But instead of denying the rumors, Selena rolled with it instead.

She posted a few red carpet photos from the festival, one of which included herself blowing a kiss at Bill.

"My first time in Cannes! I’m so honored to have been a part of this movie with Jim and the whole cast," she captioned the post.

Wait for it...

"By the way Bill Murray and I are getting married," she added.

If she was looking to get a rise out of fans — it worked.

I've already started planning the wedding.

So, what was Bill's take on all of this?

Well, frankly, he was into it.

He called Selena the kind of girl he would take home to meet his mother — if she were still alive.

He explained that he didn't exactly remember what he whispered in Selena's ear.

“I don’t remember what I said. I was trying to keep her at ease," he said.

Likely story, Bill...

“I’m always pleased to find some kind of pop icon who I really like.”

“I really like her,” he said. "She’s unusually bright. She’s kind and she’s natural.”

“I learned that I like her,” Bill told PEOPLE, about Selena.

He went on, explaining that he had some preconceptions about her beforehand — knowing what an Instagram sensation she is, but learned that he misjudged her.

"I learned that whatever preconception I had about someone that had 55 million, billion followers of something...,"

"Maybe, I probably thought she was different than she turned out to be.”

“I enjoyed her very much,” he said. “I like her very much.”

It's Selena Gomez, how can anybody not like her, amirite?

At least we know Bill has excellent taste in people.

“If my mother were alive I’d bring her home to her,” he continued.

He then jokingly added, “‘Mother. I want you to meet Selena.'”

That's just about the sweetest thing I've ever heard.

Bill compared her to another pop icon he's quite fond of.

“Like Miley Cyrus,” he said. “I dig that chick.”

Bill and Miley worked together on Sofia Coppola's Christmas special, A Very Murray Christmas, back in 2015.

“They’re really their own people,” Bill said.

“They have enormous followings, and they are sort of singing their own songs. Which is cool.” That 'sort of' might be a little shady, but we'll let it slide this time, Bill.

Bill added that he was impressed with both Selena and Miley.

Bill said they “triumphed over [child stardom], and survived whatever kind of family situation they had, too, which can also be challenging.”

How sweet!

It's official — Bill and Selena are #FriendshipGoals.

Move over Taylor Swift & the girl gang, there's a new squad I want to be a part of, and it only has two members in it.

I have my fingers crossed for a Bill Murray feature on the next Selena album.
