Ariel Winter Warns Fans Who Asked Her About Switching Antidepressants

Ariel Winter has recently opened up about her change of medication, and how it impacted her. While this is something that a lot of people are privately dealing with as well, it just goes to show that everybody is different, and the only person you should be speaking to for medical advice is your doctor.

Back in January, Ariel opened up about her sudden weight loss after fans began accusing her of losing weight by unhealthy methods.

Trolls commented on her photos, accusing her of doing "coke" and "meth", or having weight loss surgeries.

Ariel was prompted to finally set the record straight after a fan replied to her Instagram story asking “why so thin?”

“For years I had been on antidepressants that caused me to gain weight that I couldn’t lose no matter what I did,” she explained.

“It was always frustrating for me because I wanted to be able to get fit and feel like the work I was doing was paying off, but it never felt that way," she went on.

"I had accepted it and moved on.”

She explained that she stayed on the same antidepressant for a while despite its side effects, because the process of switching medications is “really long and difficult.”

She went on, saying that she would rather be "meh" than endure the taxing process of changing medications.

“I wasn’t ready to go through it again," she said.

"So I just accepted feeling meh instead of trying to find something to actually feel better."

She revealed that eventually, she was able to find a medication that was a perfect match for her.

“The change in medication instantly made me drop all of the weight I couldn’t lose before by just giving me back a metabolism,” she explained.

“That was very unexpected," she said.

She shared that she had been struggling to lose weight for quite some time before changing medications.

A fan recently commented on one of her Instagram photos, politely asking what medication Ariel is currently on.

They highlighted that they were particularly interested in the weight loss aspect.

“Hi, so I read online that you changed meds and you were able to lose the weight you gained,” the fan wrote.

“May I ask what are the meds you are on now that have helped?"

"Any info would be helpful so I can talk to my doctor," they added.

Ariel replied, but she avoided telling the fan exactly what medication she is on. Instead, she offered her some advice.

She explained that taking antidepressants just because they worked on someone else can be harmful.

“My psychiatrist and therapist both advised me that it could be potentially harmful to anyone who thinks that since it worked for me it will automatically work for them,” Ariel wrote.

She warned the fan that just because it worked on her or others doesn't mean it will work the same for everyone who takes it.

“Just because it changed the weight side effect for me doesn’t mean it will for everyone."

“Personally, all of the meds I’d tried before gave me the opposite side effects than the common ones I’d been told to look out for.”

Ariel revealed that she had tried more than 10 different medications before finding the one that worked best for her.

"To give a quick example of what I mean, Wellbutrin is one of the meds I switched to. It caused weight loss for me (really just gave me a metabolism back)," she continued.

"But caused you weight gain. Not to mention other medical factors that differ for each one of us."

“It’s an extremely difficult process to go through," Ariel added, encouraging her fan — letting her know it will all be worth it in the end.

"But eventually you’ll realise all of the trials are worth it. Stay strong."

Ariel's advice was a good reminder to always speak to your doctor about your medications — not a celebrity.
