Biker Thanks Doctor Who Performed Lifesaving Roadside Heart Surgery On Him

One biker got the opportunity to personally thank the doctor who performed life saving, roadside heart surgery on him after his crash.

Motorcyclists are seriously over-represented when it comes to traffic crashes and fatalities. Fatal crashes involving a motorcyclist are 28 times more likely to occur than those involving a car.

In October 2018, 47-year-old motorcyclist John O'Brien was going for a ride through Delamere, Cheshire, when he was involved in a serious accident, LADBible reported.

John's injuries sustained during the crash were quite severe.

He went into cardiac arrest while the responding medical team were attempting to load him into an air ambulance. So they had to leap into immediate action.

Dr. Mike Forrest was on the scene and was one of the people attending to John.

He pumped blood into the unresponsive O'Brien and attempted to restart his heart by decompressing it. However, nothing appeared to be working.

It was then that Dr. Forrest decided the only way to save John's life was to operate on him there on the side of the road.

He sliced open John's chest and began an open heart massage. This also exposed his heart and lungs to the air, which helped the internal bleeding.

Quite miraculously, John's heart began beating again.

Thanks to the actions of Dr. Forrest, the motorcyclist was alive and airlifted to Aintree Hospital where he underwent further surgery.

Now, months after that fateful crash, John has made a full recovery.

He was even able to walk his daughter down the aisle at her wedding earlier this month, and he knew he had one man in particular to thank for that.

John held an event at Northwich Fire Station to thank everyone involved in his lifesaving rescue that day.

There was particular emphasis placed on Dr. Forrest, who was given special commendation by Cheshire Chief Fire Officer Mark Cashin for his actions the day John nearly lost his life.

At the event, John was able to give his lifesaver a big hug and personally thank him for his actions that day.

"I can't thank Dr Forrest and everyone involved enough for helping me that day and for doing everything they could to save my life," he said.

Dr. Forrest described the moments leading up to the roadside surgery and expressed his praise for John's efforts in his own recovery.

"John has undoubtedly played a big part in his own recuperation since then," he said. "He has obviously worked really hard to get to the level of fitness he is right now. It will have been a tough road to recovery so his determination is commendable."
