Guy Tricks Girlfriend Into Thinking He’s Going To Propose And Asks If He’s A Jerk

Are there any valid reasons to get revenge on someone?

It's difficult to say, though one can argue that if you're in a relationship with someone, they deserve a certain level of respect that revenge just doesn't intersect with.

How much privacy are you entitled to in a relationship?

It's another question that people have a lot of varying opinions on.

Some would say that everything needs to be shared with a partner, while others argue that having your own, individual aspects of your separate lives is extremely important.

Someone on Reddit has an opinion on both privacy and revenge within relationships, but he's not quite sure if he's in the right.

The man explained that though he's in a committed relationship, he regards browsing Reddit as his private time.

"I like having Reddit as my own little bit of private space away from anything in the relationship" he wrote, "Not that I’ve ever done anything wrong, but it’s just nice to not be joined at the hip."

After taking a shower one night, he noticed that his iPad screen looked different than how he had left it.

"After checking a few things out, I saw Reddit was the last app used. When opened it went straight to a private message I had with someone from months ago."

His girlfriend had obviously been snooping through his accounts.

He explained that though he had nothing to hide, the idea that she was going through his stuff really annoyed him.

He tried confronting her, but she denied having gone through his Reddit.

"To test if she was still monitoring my main account, I posted a picture of me holding an engagement ring stating I would be proposing on Saturday."

The post had only gotten a few likes and comments, meaning that the only way his girlfriend would see it would be if she logged into his account.

Later that weekend, she got her nails done, and on Saturday she showed up for dinner in a long flowing dress.

But when they arrived at Nandos, it became clear that no proposal was coming.

She was quiet for the rest of the night, and hasn't spoken to her boyfriend since, which he takes as a sign of her guilt.

The internet had a lot of varying opinions.

"You suck for leading her into thinking the most romantic moment of her life was coming" one person wrote, "and you crushed her heart by pretending."

Other users argued that she deserved what she got for snooping, and that the two acts were pretty much equal.

One commenter's opinion seemed to make the most sense.

"Playing games is never the right answer," they wrote, "We're talking about adults here, right?"

Confronting her about snooping may not have worked, but there has to be something better than make a large effort to bring her up just to knock her down.

Was this guy the jerk? That's for you to decide.
