The world is a complicated place.
Despite my belief that human beings are inherently good, sometimes things happen that force me to rethink that belief.
I want to believe that everyone has a good reason for the things they do, but events like this just make no moral sense.
To be fair, there are circumstances in which people come into ownership of pets that they can't take care of.
But these are living beings, not random possessions. You cannot just throw them away when you're 'done with them'.
If you don't have the resources to take care of an animal, you need to bring them to a shelter or make arrangements to find them another home, whether through selling or fostering.
Don't let it get to the point in which you do something you'll regret.
The video shows her exiting a car in a parking lot outside of the festival venue and throwing the bag of live puppies into the dumpster in 90 degree weather.
This woman could've easily dropped these dogs outside of a shelter, or posted an ad for them online.
Instead, she selfishly chose to leave them to die.
They contacted police, and Riverside County Animal Services arrived on the scene to care for the newborn pups, so young that they hadn't even opened their eyes yet.
But the three-day-old terrier mixes would have most definitely died if they hadn't been found within an hour of being dumped.
They are now in foster care, being properly cared for until they are old enough to be adopted.
“There is no excuse for dumping puppies," he stated in a Facebook post. "Especially in today’s age when we or other shelters would be willing to get these animals to foster parents or rescue partners."
"Why do people do this?" @stuffedlicorne wrote, "sell them, put them up for adoption, give them to others who will love them???"
"I don't get it," one twitter user wrote, "I just don't get it dude. There's a shelter down the road from this dumpster. Why the f*** would you do this?"
Maybe she thought that if she brought the dogs to the shelter, the workers would try to make her feel bad.
Maybe she thought that this was the fastest, most painless solution for her.
But it is important to understand why people do things like this so that we can prevent them in the future.
What systems are in place that drive people into this kind of desperation?
Even celebrities want her found and brought to justice for her actions.
She will very likely face charges of animal cruelty when found, though it was obvious that her intent was to leave the dogs to die.
Regardless of this woman's situation, treating animals like this is never okay.
We hope that the woman is made to answer for her actions, but more importantly, we hope that the puppies grow in good health and are adopted into loving families.
