As we’ve learned over and over again, one of the most common reasons that couples fight has to do with money. Whether it has to do with each partner’s attitude towards spending it or just how and why a couple can’t seem to get enough of it, finances are definitely going to come up at some point.
But sometimes, it’s clear that some of these arguments are less about the stresses of living in this economy and more about control.
And that certainly seemed to be the case with one argument overheard in an airport.
Twitter user @mzbat was waiting for her flight in the airport waiting area.
As can happen in public, shared spaces, she overheard an argument that baffled and disturbed her all at once.
Yep, apparently being mad that a woman makes more money than you, a man, is still a thing for some folks.
Plus, trying to get one’s partner to do something by claiming they don’t love them if they won’t is already considered emotional blackmail in all but the most dire of circumstances, but it came off as particularly shocking here.
As the conversation continued, @mzbat found more reasons to be upset.
There has been a lot of talk lately about whether or not it’s okay to live tweet other people’s conversations or activities, but I’m with @mzbat on this one.
Plus, there aren’t any photos or identifying details, so I think this one’s fine.
As far as @mzbat could tell, the guy didn’t seem to show any consideration for his girlfriend’s feelings or ambitions at all.
And the next bomb he dropped in this argument all but confirmed that.
Apparently, he had very specific plans for how their relationship would unfold.
From the sounds of it, @mzbat had to take a look around to make sure she hadn’t time traveled back to the 1950s.
Yes, because in the 21st Century, that’s just what’s expected of women still, right?
Thankfully, it also seemed like this guy had overplayed his hand with that last remark and his girlfriend had finally had enough.
Apparently, they had never actually discussed the topic of children.
He made his rigid decisions about both of their futures without ever consulting her.
It turned out that her promotion wasn’t the only issue with the relationship.
Clearly, this woman was not going to let him keep that up.
There was no way she’d let him exert control over both her career opportunities and her reproductive rights.
And to @mzbat’s amazement, the woman wasn’t even going to stick around to listen.
Not only did the woman rage quit their Cancun vacation, but she got applause from the crowd, which really says something about how loud the argument had been.
Although this meant @mzbat had lost her airport entertainment, she couldn’t have been more pleased with how it ended.
It seems we’ll just never know whether his rage texts were him frantically searching for some supportive words from his friends or a last-ditch attempt to get the last word in.
And on the off chance that the woman in this situation ever reads @mzbat’s thread, she had a final message of encouragement for her.
From the sounds of things, she also gave the guy one thing that he wanted. Technically, he won’t be making less money than his girlfriend now.
As cathartic as this story was, some users weren’t ready to believe that it had actually happened.
If it is true that other passengers clapped as the woman walked away, that makes this story bear an unfortunate resemblance to a lot of other tales floating around the internet that obviously didn’t happen.
However, another user had a response to these suspicions that is difficult to argue with.
As @SundayGirlLA wrote, “People clap when a plane lands so totally possible they would clap for this.”
Considering where this took place, they had the opportunity to clap for both reasons that day.
