Petition Looks To Sell Montana To Canada For $1 Trillion To Fight The Debt

One thing you can say for sure about America, it's a land of ideas. They're not always practical, or well thought out, or even reasonable, but by golly, America is definitely brimming with ideas. How else do you explain all those wacky inflatable waving arm tube guys?

Generally speaking, all those ideas have good intentions. And, you have to give it to the idea below — it has a goal.

With America's debt out of control, one enterprising person had an idea to help out: Sell Montana to Canada for $1 trillion.

Just after it was announced that the national debt had hit a record $22 trillion, Ian Hammond started a petition on Change.org asking to start liquidating some of America's assets, starting with the Treasure State.

It's clearly a tongue-in-cheek petition.

In his description, Ian writes that "We have too much debt and Montana is useless. Just tell them it has beavers or something." But it's hard to say for sure whether the support his petition has received is serious or not.

With a goal of 5,000 signatures, the petition is already 80% of the way there, and counting.

It's probably not the most realistic plan, however. With a GDP of 1.65 trillion, it's hard to imagine how Canada could afford Montana at that price, unless it's in about 1000 easy payments of $1 billion.

And there's a question of how folks in Montana and Canada would feel about the exchange.

But, if you check out the comments on the petition, well, folks seem to be in favor of the whole thing.

"Montana will get legal weed, health care and decent hockey. It's a win win," wrote one user.

"I live in Montana, and Canada seems awesome," wrote another user.

"I've been a resident of Montana my entire life, and quite frankly I'm sick of the US's complete and utter disregard for human life," wrote someone else. "I'll take Canadas healthcare, education, and freedom over the US's money grubbing system. Also, Canada gets all of Glacier Park and some of Yellowstone."

Some folks had some other real estate deals on their mind to generate some funds.

"Sell Wyoming and Idaho too who cares about them," someone wrote.

"How about California...All those Wildfires are causing debt, let the queen deal with it," wrote another user.

"I'm writing this because I hope Minnesota is next," wrote someone else.

A few Canadians chimed in as well to give their thoughts on acquiring more big sky country.

"I quite like Montana," wrote one user. "I think it will make a nice addition to Canada's portfolio."

"As a Canadian, I would love to have Montana on board. We like parks, beavers, bears, and also people who "get" enlightened government and the idea of all pulling together to make everyones life better. But we also respect differences and individualism ... near as I can tell Montana would be a great fit!" wrote another.

"We'll take you Montana!! You might have to drop the price a bit though. lol Love, Canada," wrote another user.

So, as much as it's a bit of fun, maybe Ian is kind of onto something.

I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens when his petition hits 5,000 signatures. It's pretty far-fetched, but hey, who knows? Stranger things have happened.
