February Newborns Wear Handmade Red Hats To Raise Awareness About Heart Disease

In hospitals across the country, newborns who arrive in February will be gifted a tiny, red hat.

Not only are these hats adorable, they also spread awareness about a special cause in honor of American Heart Month.

Take a look at this cute intitiative and why it is shedding light on an important cause.

The "Little Hats, Big Hearts" Project was first started in 2014.

The goal of the project is to spread awareness about heart disease and congenital heart defects.

February is Heart Awareness Month, and this movement also coincides with annual "Wear Red Day" .

The American Heart Association and Children's Heart Foundation are behind "Little Hats, Big Hearts".

Both organizations want to encourage healthy hearts for life as heart disease is common among Americans of all ages.

The program has grown from 300 hats to thousands.

Now, across 40 states, volunteers knit and crochet the hats for newborns each year.

Every year, more and more volunteers get to work to gift these hats to babies and raise awareness about this cause.

With their red hats, these babies are becoming important spokespeople for this cause.

And they're only a few hours old! That's amazing!

So, not only do they look precious, they're doing an important job.

"Little Hats, Big Hearts", is always looking for new volunteers.

If you are a seasoned knitter or crocheter, or even if you are brand-new at it, you can get involved.

Check out the American Heart Association's website for information and get to work making those hats!
