Everyone knows the joke about how you can literally use duct tape to fix anything. Well, as these hacks demonstrate, maybe there is some truth to that joke.

Duct tape can be used for so much more than, well, taping up your ducts. Check out these super handy uses — many of them were new to me!

Fix hiking boots

If you're going on a hike or camping, be sure to throw a roll of duct tape in your bag.

You never know when you might need it and it can seriously come in handy.

In this photo, with the help of some duct tape, the toe of this boot was fixed up in a flash.

Add a keychain to your chapstick

With a few small pieces of duct tape, you can secure your chapstick to any zipper or keychain. Never be without your chapstick again!

You could also try this hack with a small flashlight.

Do a quick hem

The Krazy Coupon Lady came up with this clever idea when you don't have time to visit the tailor. Simply cuff your pants and tape the hem to the inside of your pant's leg. No one will be able to tell.

Prevent streaks on your floor

If your desk chair keeps leaving black streaks on your hardwood floor, wrap the wheels in a bit of duct tape. Save your floors and save money!

Make your stairs more visible

Did you know that you can buy glow-in-the-dark duct tape? This is news to me, but I'm going to pick up a few rolls soon.

Use this glow-in-the-dark tape to mark your cellar stairs to prevent any trips and falls.

Upholster a chair

You probably won't want to do this for all your furniture, but when you don't want to shell out money for new patio furniture, or in this case, a boat chair, duct tape has you covered.

If you're in a survival situation and need to make a cup, you can use duct tape. Duct tape is waterproof, so you can actually use this to hold liquids.

Keep a dustpan in place

No more struggling when you sweep the floors. Secure your dustpan to the floor when you're sweeping to prevent that annoying gap and ensure all the dirt makes its way into the pan.

Make a DIY wrap for your cords

By using duct tape to wrap your cables, you can customize the size to fit your needs. Cut two small notches in your duct tape like the photo above.

This way, you can eliminate transferring any sticky residue from the tape.

Fold the piece of tape in half, with the sticky sides facing each other.

You should still have a small notch free with a bit of the sticky side showing. You can use this piece to secure the tape once you've wrapped your cords. Is this genius or what?

DIY a handle when moving heavy things

If you're moving something that is large and difficult to get a grip on, duct tape a handle for it. Ideally, you won't use this for prolonged carrying, but it's helpful to get that initial grip.

Cup holder

I'll admit that this isn't the best-looking cup holder, but it gets the job done. If you need to add a cup holder to something like an office chair, or even a patio chair, tape your roll of duct tape to the chair's arm. It's weird but it works.

Cut strips of duct tape and place them around the edges of your Ziploc bag.

Now you can use the bag to hold more and you don't have to worry about it breaking. This is especially useful for holding heavy items like tools and screws.

Pitchfork fix

It's hard to tell at first, but this pitchfork was missing some of its prongs. A few pieces of duct tape made it functional again.

Not sure if this counts as a duct tape hack, but why not?

I mean, technically you could this with any roll of tape, but obviously, duct tape is far superior, even when making a DIY cup holder like this.

Protect your shoes

This person forgot their work shoes. Instead of getting their sneaks dirty, they wrapped them in duct tape to keep them squeaky-clean!

This clever Instagram user used patterned duct tape to transform this step stool from a boys' design into one for a little girl.

Quick stroller fix

If your stroller has any foam cushioning on the handles or the safety bar, you've probably noticed that the foam will rip over time. Black duct tape is the perfect fix.

Open a jar

If you're in the middle of cooking but are struggling to get the lid off a jar, grab yourself a piece of duct tape.

Wrap the tape around the lid of the jar and give it a good pull. Be careful, though! Some of the jar's contents might splash in the process.
