16+ 'Big Mouth' Easter Eggs You Might've Missed In Season 2

Season 2 of Big Mouth came at us hard, wet, and tight — clearly, it's still left an impression on me. But it's definitely one of those shows that's so jam-packed with jokes that it's easy to let some fly over your head.

It's even easier to miss the jokes that either go by too quickly or are hidden away in the background. So today, we gathered up some gems that you may or may not have picked up on. Check 'em out!

1. "The Bowling Dudes"

Netflix

In this season, it's clearer than ever that Jessie's dad, Jeff, smokes a loooot of the "goat cheese omelette" — so, having a classic stoner movie poster in his room makes sense.

It's a parody of The Big Lebowski, which features a lot of bowling and goat cheese omelette puffin'.

2. Blink and you'll miss it.

Netflix

In the first episode, we catch up with Jay and Jessie after they've run away in last season's finale.

When we cut to them at a diner, a server walks by for maybe two seconds with a pretty suspect dish. It's the dreaded blue waffle! DON'T GOOGLE IT!

It's a fictional STI that actually comes up mid-season again as a title of a horror short featuring Andrew.

3. The case of the Ponytail Killer!

Netflix

The Ponytail Killer was featured a lot more prominently in the first season but becomes something of a running Easter egg in the second.

This is what the school's ever-changing sign reads in the first episode of Season 2. It's really quick but sets up the mystery to follow.

Other than seeing the detectives who were previously investigating the killer in Season 1, we don't see anything at all about the Ponytail Killer again until the very last episode.

Netflix

When Coach Steve is, somewhat miraculously, rolling away on a bunch of loose balls, a car swerves and almost misses him.

A quick shot shows the interior of the car with a ponytail hanging from the rear-view mirror like a rosary. The gloves are another creepy touch!

It's then pretty much confirmed that the killer was driving this car, as a girl with a ponytail hops out of the trunk and escapes!

Netflix

There's even a shape in the car window that might help some super sleuths of the internet out there figure this out.

Honestly, on my first watch-through, I didn't even put this together — I just thought it was another random slice of comedy!

4. Detective Florez makes an appearance again!

Netflix, Facebook | Netflix

That's enough Ponytail Killer talk for now — but did you know that the detective investigating the case is based on a stand-up bit from John Mulaney, who voices him?

Like creator Nick Kroll, Mulaney voices a lot of characters on the show (mainly Andrew) and the inspiration from this voice is clear to anyone who's seen Mulaney's Netflix special, Kid Gorgeous.

5. Speakin' of voices...

Netflix

Nick Kroll does a ton of them on the show! That's why his main character, Nick, can pull off such a great Coach Steve impression — it's the same voice actor.

He also does the voices of Lola and Rick the hormone monster.

The Coach Steve impersonation is the running joke here, as it's so good that even her brother knows who Nick's imitating while playing video games in the background.

Netflix

"Heheh, Coach Steve," he mutters after another shockingly accurate impression from Nick — complete with Coach Steve's signature arm flex.

6. Jokes that literally whiz right by you.

Netflix

I know I'm not the only one who replayed this scene and paused it when the trucks drove over Rick as he tried to cross the street and leave The Friend Zone.

One is sort of a subliminal message to Nick, while the other references a recurring joke and includes Jay's dad's number — 555-LUV-DIES — savage.

7. Broadway billboard

Reddit | Nutty_

Reddit user Nutty_ pointed this one out!

Maybe a little shameless advertising, but still appreciated, a billboard can be seen advertising the Broadway show Oh, Hello — which stars both Nick Kroll and John Mulaney, aka Nick and Andrew.

8. Aerosmith fans!

Netflix

There are quite a few references to the band Aerosmith throughout the season.

The first is maybe the most obvious, with a screaming Steven Tyler air freshener in episode 6.

The other is a tiny little detail in the back of Maurice's office, a note reminding himself to pick up Aerosmith tickets.

9. That's not chalk...

Netflix

If you're not a sports fan, you might not have caught this reference.

Lebron James iconically tosses chalk into a crowd to amp up the energy before a game. This was simply Coach Steve's disgusting version of that.

10. R-R-R-REMIX

Netflix

The song that the Shame Wizard pumps out while messing with everyone at the sleepover in episode 8 is actually a remix of the theme song to The Kroll Show — one of Nick Kroll's earlier comedy ventures.

11. Lord of the Flies.

Netflix

Speaking of episode 8, when chaos erupts and Missy just lets loose with her glow worm toy, these brutal kids can be spotted in the background acting out a scene from the book The Lord of the Flies.

Spoiler alert, it does not end well for the boy in glasses there.

12. Stop quoting Jay's dad's...wallpaper?

Netflix

Just another tiny little detail the animators put into the scenery. At Jay's house, you can see that the wallpaper pattern includes the scales of justice — a symbol of law, courtrooms, and lawyers...even sleazy ones like Jay's dad.

13. Blue balls

Netflix

In a similar fashion, Andrew's bed sheets have a pretty common pattern for a cliché boys' room — including the bats and baseballs.

I could be way off-base here, but I thought the color of blue was probably a purposeful choice for these balls.

14. "Is that grandma in the tub or not?!"

Netflix

I don't speak Spanish at all, so this was a quick throwaway line that I'd never understand if my girlfriend wasn't there to translate it.

After Nick jokes with Gina about her leaving her grandmother in the tub, he confides in Duke about his relationship problems.

Duke is more focused on the grandma and sings this line. In English, it means, "I like cold grandma." Which honestly is still making me laugh so hard. What a great character.

15. Standard animation

Netflix

When Connie suggests a "five-finger discount" at the drug store, Jessie notes that she actually only has four fingers, which is "standard animation."

Later, when Nick is explaining how great Netflix is to Gina (very meta!), he raises five fingers in a way that only a cartoon would. It's another tiny joke in the details from the animators that is just too clever.

16. Sorry, the temple of what now?

Netflix

If you say it fast enough, the name of this synagogue sounds suspiciously like a drug straight outta Breaking Bad.

Plus, the parking lot is always full, which is a nice nod to the complaints of apparently everyone at that place.

17. Shame! Shame! Shame!

Reddit | Lampshade36

Of course the Shame Wizard is a big fan of the Shame Lady from Game of Thrones!

I love that it's a signed autograph, featuring the running phrase, "You're the man."

18. Because every kid is a Dolph Lundgren fan, right?

Netflix

The mini-putt place where Nick and Andrew have their double date is a play on the name of actor Dolph Lundgren — famous for classic '80s movies like Rocky IV and Masters of the Universe.

The whole place is pretty littered with references from his movies, but I thought this one really stood out.

Netflix, Giphy

An iconic line from the Rocky antagonist, Drago — now with a tasty twist

19. "Get Out!"

Netflix, Reddit | TraditionalVegetable

A bit more of an obvious reference, but it was nice that the homage to the film Get Out was spoken right from the mouth of the film's director, Jordan Peele, who voices the Ghost of Duke Ellington. Nice touch!

20. The sleep shirt

Netflix

One last reference from John Mulaney's stand-up special, Kid Gorgeous, comes at the beginning of the first episode when Nick complains about his huge basketball jersey.

Mulaney talks about how his mom bought him an XXL Billabong hoodie that she said could be used as a "sleep shirt."
