It happens with nearly every television show we fall in love with. At least midway through the series, the show decides to add a new character to switch things up.
Sometimes this works out okay, but more often than not it’s a total disaster and this new character ends up totally ruining a quality show.

1. Chloe in Fairly Odd Parents.
She has got to be the most annoyingly over-the-top character that this show has ever created.
She added literally nothing to the series. I know she’s just a cartoon, but come on , Nickelodeon, get it together.
2. C.J. in 8 Simple Rules.
We get that the show had to bring in new characters afterJohn Ritter passed away, but C.J. really wasn’t all that funny and ended up causing more trouble for Kate than she needed. Let the woman grieve!
3. Nathan Riggs
in Grey’s Anatomy.
This show adds new characters all the time, but Riggs was definitely the biggest letdown. He shows up, causes a bit of drama and plays the love interest for a bit, and then leaves to live on the beach. Like, okay? Good riddance.
4. The new Aunt Vivian in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
After the third season, Janet Hubert-Whitten was replaced with Daphne Maxwell Reid, and the show was never the same.
It was like they didn’t even try to make Aunt Viv the same sassy, spunky woman, and it was such a letdown.
5. Janine in Friends.
Her story arch was so annoying. We wanted to like her because Joey was crushing on her, but she was SO rude to Monica and Chandler that she quickly became insufferable.
We’re glad Joey kicked her out pronto.
6. Any new manager in The Office.
Deangelo Vickers was definitely the worst, but basically everybody who replaced Michael Scott was such a train wreck — even Andy.
I almost liked Robert California until his “list” episode.
7. Nellie in The Office.
Honestly, nearly anyone who came in during the later seasons was a flop, but Nellie was the most insufferable.
Her behavior was just so bizarre and inexplicable, and she didn’t fit in with the others at all.
8. Cousin Oliver in The Brady Bunch.
Throwing it back a bit here, cousin Oliver was one of the first examples of adding a new character for no good reason and leading to disaster. Some even think he’s the reason the show was almost immediately cancelled.
9. April Nardini in Gilmore Girls.
She was basically Rory 2.0 and was nothing but a silly obstacle for Luke to deal with. Even her brief appearance in the reboot, A Year in the Life , was too much to handle.
10. Liz Danes in Gilmore Girls.
Luke’s sister, Liz, was just too sporadic and only showed up when it was convenient to the plot. More often than not she as an inconvenience to everyone, and just offered nothing to the show.
11. Priya in The Big Bang Theory.
She really didn’t fit in with the other characters, and as soon as she wanted Leonard to stop seeing Penny and got really controlling, I was over her.
12. Scrappy-Doo in Scooby-Doo.
On the bright side, we can all collectively agree that he was the absolute worst — any time I heard the phrase “Puppy Power,” I wanted to throw my TV across the room.
13. Walden Schmidt in Two and a Half Men.
It really wasn’t Ashton Kutcher’s fault that this character was so bad. They had no choice but to replace Charlie Sheen, and finding an even better fit would have been next to impossible.
14. Taylor Townsend in The O.C.
Although this one is a bit more controversial, I’d say that this character was by far the most annoying character on the show. I will admit that Autumn Reeser did a pretty fantastic job at playing the part, though.
15. Every new character in the later seasons of Glee.
This show really dropped the ball by bringing in way too many new characters all at once.
It honestly would have been better to keep the cast in high school and just pretend like no time is passing. I don’t like change, okay???
16. Poochie and Roy in The Simpsons.
I think any longtime fan of this show can agree that these characters were short-lived for a reason.
