Jamie Lee Curtis Opens Up On 22 Year Sobriety: 'I Was A Young Star At War'

Jamie Lee Curtis is celebrating a major milestone.

She just hit 22 years sober from the substance abuse problems that secretly plagued her for a decade.

To celebrate the major milestone, she took to Instagram to share words of hope and encouragement to those who need it most.

Come see what the Knives Out actress had to say.

Jamie Lee has always been open about her former substance abuse problems.

In 2018, she opened up to People about the 10-year opioid addiction that no one knew about.

She had first been prescribed them in 1989 after surgery for her "hereditary puffy eyes."

She was thrown down a slippery slope from there, hiding her addiction for a decade while also trying to get pills any way that she could.

"I was the wildly controlled drug addict and alcoholic. I never did it when I worked. I never took drugs before 5 p.m. I never, ever took painkillers at 10 in the morning," she told Variety.

At one point, she even stole her friend's pills.

"So I wrote her a letter and I said, ‘I’ve done a terrible thing, and I’ve stolen your pills from you, and I’m sorry,'" she said.

That wasn't the star's only low point. Since substance abuse runs in her family, she once did drugs with her dad, actor Tony Curtis.

“I knew my dad had an issue because I had an issue and he and I shared drugs,” Curtis revealed to *Variety's Recovery Issue.

“I did cocaine and freebased once with my dad,” Curtis added.

“But that was the only time I did that, and I did that with him.”

Thankfully, after reading an article on painkiller addiction in 1993, she sought help. She's been sober ever since.

Since then, the actress has relished serving as a pillar of strength for those who are struggling with substance abuse.

This past Wednesday, Feb. 3, she shared a post just for them.

"A LONG time ago…"

" In a galaxy far, far away… I was a young STAR at WAR with herself," she wrote alongside a throwback photo of her younger self holding a glass of wine.

"I didn't know it then. I chased everything. I kept it hidden. I was a sick as my secrets."

She then shared some encouraging words on what worked for her.

"With God's grace and the support of MANY people who could relate to all the 'feelings' and a couple of sober angels...I've been able to stay sober, one day at a time, for 22 years."

"I was a high bottom, pun kind of intended, so the rare photo of me proudly drinking in a photo op is very useful to help me remember," she continued.

She then shared a sweet message to those who need it: "To all those struggling and those who are on the path…MY HAND IN YOURS."

"My hand in yours" was a reference to the charity the *Knives Out* actress started during the quarantine.

They sell comfort items to help those going through a tough time. All of the proceeds go to the Children's Hospital Los Angeles.

Jamie Lee's sweet and encouraging message on Instagram hit home with many fans.

"I’m so happy for you and all my sober relatives and friends who had the strength to save themselves," wrote user @justkristen_a.

"You empower an Empire of sobriety for so many," added another.

One fan even wrote that Jamie's message is helping their current situation. "I’m struggling hard with the drinking it’s inspiring to know that I’m not alone," they wrote.

We're so proud of Jamie Lee and the difference her story has made.
