High School Opens Student-Run Grocery Store For Struggling Local Families

One high school in a small Texas town decided to help out their community in a big way.

Students at Linda Tutt High School in Sanger realized that many families in their district were becoming overwhelmed by poverty, which was leading to incredibly high rates of food insecurity.

After much teamwork and consideration, this high school was able to create a grocery store exclusively for those in true need of food access.

Many of their own students were dealing with homelessness.

As the school's principal, Anthony Love, told CNN, "About 3.6% of our students are considered homeless."

He knew that he had to do something to change that, and so did others. In collaboration with Texas Health Resources, the grocery store Albertsons, and First Refuge Ministries, the food insecurity gap was filled.

At this student-run store, groceries can be purchased with good deeds.

Teens in need don't have to worry about not being able to afford things like paper towels, toilet paper, or basic food ingredients.

Customers can pay their items with points, which are first initially set depending on the size of the family, but which can later be obtained for outstanding school performance, doing good deeds, or completing various jobs around the school.

The goal of this store seems to be more than affordable food options, it's about passing on kindness to everyone that we can.

It's also a true example of students helping students.

The entire grocery store is run by student workers.

They stock the shelves and ring up customers with the utmost consideration. These students realize that some of their peers are going through difficult times, and understand that supporting those within their community is paramount.

This school is doing its part in making the world a better place.

This store has been helping families feel seen and heard. They're taking pride in their ability to look out for one another when things are most difficult.

Hopefully other schools recognize the impact this grocery store has on local struggling families and feel inspired to start their own stores in their own districts.

Let us know in the comments what you think of this high school's grocery store and if you feel inspired by their ambition and community support.
