Virigin River is one of Netflix's most exciting new shows. Fans cannot get enough of the soapy drama, but little did they know there is real-life drama brewing with the cast members on social media.

Virgin River actor Tim Matheson is coming under fire for making a series of controversial comments about Melania Trump on Twitter.

Tim Matheson is best known for his role as Eric "Otter" Stratton in *National Lampoon's Animal House*.

Most recently, the 73-year-old has been portraying Doc Mullins in the hit Netflix series Virgin River.

The 73-year-old has not been shy about his political opinions on Twitter.

Tim is a strong supporter of the democratic party and uses his social media to express those opinions unapologetically.

Tim has also not been shy about his hatred for former-president Donald Trump.

However, some fans think the actor has gone too far with his remarks about the former first lady.

The actor is facing backlash for some now-deleted tweets have been deemed by many as "xenophobic."

In the tweets, Tim mocked the former first lady for her ability to speak English.

While replying to an NBC News tweet about Jill Biden taking cookies out to the National Guard troops in Washington D.C, Tim tweeted: "So wonderful to have a First Lady with class and heart."

"And, can speak English!" he added.

After facing some initial backlash for his tweet, he doubled down on his stance.

"Comedy is sometimes cruelly honest. The ex-First Lady doesn't have any of my respect for anything. Sorry."

His tweets have since been deleted.

Needless to say, mocking Melania's English didn't go over well with Tim's fans.

"You just insulted every American and every immigrant with an accent. GOOD JOB!!!!!!!" tweeted one angry user.

Even those who don't support Trump took to Twitter to express their disappointment.

"RACISM IS ALWAYS WRONG EVEN WHEN YOU DUNK ON TRUMP," agreed another.

"So much for embracing diversity," echoed a different user.

People began sharing their own stories.

"Tim, my parents were doctors in Cuba who came to the US escaping Castro. After years of hard work they got their MD’s again and practiced for 30 years. Still, throughout their professional lives here there were always fools like you who mocked their accents," shared one Twitter user.

However, some people tried to defend Tim by further explaining his comments.

"Tim wasn’t mocking Melania’s accent. Rather, her lack of effort to communicate as First Lady with Americans. If she had just spoken in Slovenian, but with warmth, empathy, and sincerity, it would have been welcomed," wrote one fan.

Later that same day, Tim took to Twitter to apologize for his comments.

"This morning I made a hasty and stupid joke about the former First Lady. It wasn't funny, and it was in poor taste. It was regretful and humorless and I apologize," he tweeted.
