Sriwijaya Air flight #SJ182 left the Soekarno–Hatta International Airport in Jakarta, Indonesia, on January 8 en route to Pontianak. The flight was being operated by a Boeing 737-500 and was carrying 62 passengers.

The flight departed at 7:36 UTC.

Only four minutes later at 7:40 UTC the ADS-B signal, the signal that tracks a plane's location via satellite, was lost.

Within 60 seconds of the plane's connection being lost, it went from its highest altitude of 10,900 feet to its last recorded altitude of 250 feet, leading officials to believe this was a crash.

The Ministry of Transportation was quick to get a search going.

In a statement, they said, "The missing plane is currently under investigation and under coordination with the National Search and Rescue Agency and the National Transportation Safety Committee."

Alongside the mystery of the plane failure itself are the 62 missing people.

The plane was carrying 56 passengers and 6 crew members, all of whom there has been no trace of.

A search and rescue team were already on the ground not long after the suspected crash.

Officials expected the plane to have fallen around Thousand Islands, but have yet to determine the exact coordinates. Before they called off the search for the night due to visibility issues, they did find some plane debris, leading them to believe they're in the right area.

Boeing is well aware of the situation and are doing what they can to assist.

"We are aware of media reports from Jakarta, and are closely monitoring the situation. We are working to gather more information," they said in a statement.

Search and rescue teams are back out today in search of answers and survivors.
