Wouldn’t it be fun to create an escape for you and your family during this dreary winter pandemic season? Well, that’s exactly what this one creative family did, and you won’t believe what they came up with together.
Here I am complaining about going outside to get some exercise, and they’re embracing the cold Canadian winter like no other.
The Gambin family from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada are the outdoorsy types.
But, they didn’t want to spend their entire winter indoors during the pandemic. Instead, they came up with the most interesting idea I have ever heard of — they built a colorful, outdoor igloo.
Say what? Oh, yes, you read this right.
This awesome family built an igloo, just like traditional Inuit families do. Doesn’t that sound like a fun project that the whole family would enjoy? It sure does to me!
Tyler Gamblin, his wife, and their two small children all contributed to this creative project.
And the best part of it is that it only cost them $25. Whoa, I never would have guessed that. What about you? Who knew it could be so dang cheap?
Having said that, it wasn’t as easy as one would think.
It actually took the family about 50 hours to build it over a month and a half. So it was a pretty ambitious endeavor, to say the least. Oh, my!
They had to freeze several blocks of ice in their deep freezer each night.
Wow, that sounds like it would take a long time. And sometimes, the ice ended up just exploding at some points in the freezing cold. Yikes!
The other hard part of the entire building process was getting the arches to hold up as they froze together.
Then, there were also issues with the food coloring they used to make the igloos look very festive and colorful.
Even though this family isn’t indigenous, they do appreciate the Inuit way of living.
In fact, Tyler would like to travel up north to see how indigenous people build igloos in the Arctic. I think that would be so fascinating to see for yourself.
For now, the Gamblins will enjoy the igloo in addition to other fun things they have put up in their yard to stay busy this winter.
They also set up a mini ice rink and a decorative inukshuk. Tyler even plans to sleep overnight with his son in the igloo.

I don’t know if I could ever embark on creating something as elaborate as this, but I sure do appreciate this family’s amazing effort.
