Fans Are Furious After 'Saved By The Bell' Jokes About Selena Gomez' Kidney Transplant

While many people love to joke about celebrities, in real life or on television, most people accept that serious health concerns are off limits when it comes to comedy. Musician and actress Selena Gomez recently trended on Twitter after the Saved By The Bell reboot made repeated references to her fight with lupus on a recent episode.

Selena Gomez has been very public about her battle with lupus since she revealed in 2015.

Selena has received various treatments for lupus, including undergoing chemotherapy in 2015, as well as receiving a kidney transplant in 2017 from her friend Francia Raisa, which she opened up about in an emotional Instagram post.

While this occurred three years ago, it became a topic of conversation once again after the Saved By The Bell reboot made repeated references to the incident on a recent episode.

Selena Gomez fans felt the show was disrespectful to Selena's illness.

"I know for a fact that Selena Gomez' kidney donor was Justin Bieber's mom," one character says while another argues that "It was Demi Lovato's kidney, they're best friends, like you and I were."

At another point, graffiti written on the wall behind the characters reads, "Does Selena Gomez even have a kidney?"

Fans began trending #RespectSelenaGomez on Twitter after the episode aired.

"I’m DISGUSTED with the scene in saved by the bell reboot about selena. this woman has been through so so much & they say that. they could’ve used ANY other stories about a celeb but no they use such a terrible thing that happened in her life & joked about it," one fan wrote.

NBC has since apologized for the jokes.

“We apologize. It was never our intention to make light of Selena’s health. We have been in touch with her team and will be making a donation to her charity, The Selena Gomez Fund for Lupus Research at USC,” they said in a statement.
