Mads Mikkelsen Reportedly Already In Talks To Replace Johnny Depp In 'Fantastic Beasts'

It's always got to be difficult to cast a role in an iconic franchise like Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them. It must be that much more difficult to cast a role that's already had a very popular actor in it, which is the case for the character of Gellert Grindelwald, as previously portrayed by Johnny Depp.

Johnny Depp previously starred in the *Fantastic Beasts* film as Gellert Grindelwald.

The popular prequel series to Harry Potter also stars Eddie Redmayne, Ezra Miller, and Colin Farrell.

However, in a move that many fans found shocking, Johnny recently announced he would be resigning from the series, which is filming its third installment.

"Firstly, I'd like to thank everybody who has gifted me with their support and loyalty,” Johnny wrote on Instagram.

"I have been humbled and moved by your many messages of love and concern, particularly over the last few days," he said. "Secondly, I wish to let you know that I have been asked to resign by Warner Bros. from my role as Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts and I have respected and agreed to that request."

The move follows the results of a recent court case pertaining to the domestic violence allegations between Depp and his ex-wife, Amber Heard.

It seems like the film is not wasting any time in getting the character recast.

According to a report from Deadline, actor Mads Mikkelsen, best known for his work in Hannibal, Rogue One, Doctor Strange, and Casino Royale, is director David Yates' top pick to play Grindelwald, and is reportedly already in talks to take on the role.
