Hallmark Will Feature LGBTQ Stories In Their Christmas Movies For The First Time

There are some things that mean Christmas is coming, regardless of what time of year it is. Gingerbread cookies, snow on the ground, the smell of pine trees, and so-cheesy-they're-good Christmas movies playing almost constantly on the Hallmark channel.

This year, those movies might look a little bit more diverse than usual!

The Hallmark Channel is pretty much synonymous with Christmas movies.

They pretty much dominate the Christmas movie market every year with such classics as A Christmas Detour, Christmas In Rome, Family For Christmas, Switched For Christmas, Journey Back To Christmas and many more wholesome, warm, adorable Christmas films.

Last year, The Hallmark Channel got into some hot water for airing Zola commercials that featured same-sex couples.

At the time, they said the commercials were aired by mistake and pulled the ads, but have since declared that that was “the wrong decision."

“Our mission is rooted in helping all people connect, celebrate traditions, and be inspired to capture meaningful moments in their lives. Anything that detracts from this purpose is not who we are.”

This year, it looks like they're really changing their tune.

In the annual Countdown To Christmas movie marathon this year, Hallmark has announced that there will be LGTBQ stories in those movies.

While this will likely end up being a controversial move, it seems like it's about time to me!

George Zaralidis, vice president of network publicity for Crown Media Family, made a statement.

“We look forward to making some exciting programming announcements in the coming months, including announcements about projects featuring LGBTQ storylines, characters, and actors,” he said, identifying diversity and inclusion as "top priorities."

That's awesome!
