June is Pride Month, and many companies, celebrities, regular people, and brands are celebrating with posts announcing either their membership in the LGBT+ community or their support for the community.
Nickelodeon's tweet about Pride Month raised a lot of eyebrows due to the pictures they chose to include, and while they turned off replies to the tweet, Twitter still talked up a storm about it.
As far back as 2002, audiences have been wondering about the yellow sponge's flamboyant nature and close friendship with Patrick, although largely in a pretty tongue-in-cheek manner.
In the past, Nickelodeon has maintained that SpongeBob isn't gay, but it looks like their tune may have changed.
The tweet included rainbow-ified artwork of SpongeBob, Schwoz Schwartz from Henry Danger, and Korra from Avatar: The Legend of Korra in the tweet.
Schwoz is played by transgender actor Michael D. Cohen, and Korra ends her series with a girlfriend, so some people felt that SpongeBob's inclusion was a sign.
While most people took it in a cheeky manner and less of a serious declaration, some people were genuinely very excited to learn that SpongeBob could be a member of the LGBT+ community.
Others were quick to remind people that he technically already was.
"We never intended them to be gay. I consider them to be almost asexual. We're just trying to be funny, and this has got nothing to do with the show." Hillenberg had said.
Asexuality is defined as a lack of sexual attraction, and is often included under the LGBT+ umbrella.
