10+ Celebs People Thought Were American But Are Actually Canadian

There's a lot more to Canada than just polite mannerisms and maple syrup. Some of the greatest exports in the entertainment world hail from the True North, yet are often confused with their American cousins.

While it's certainly true that many of the celebrities on this list now call the USA their home, they're still hosers at heart.

Prepare to be pleasantly surprised when you read about these 10+ celebs people thought were American but are actually Canadian!

Justin Bieber.

With the number of times that Justin's spent appearing on The Ellen Show over the years, you could be forgiven for presuming the pop star bleeds red, white, and blue.

In fact, Justin comes from the small town of Stratford, ON.

Drake.

Yes, Drizzy has a lot of love for Houston and the 713. Make no mistake though, he's a proud Torontonian and a die-hard Raptors fan.

During the bulk of the regular season and especially during playoffs you can always catch Drake on the sidelines.

Jim Carrey.

In the 1990s, there wasn't a comedian alive more popular than Jim Carrey. Although he's since become an American citizen, Jim was originally born in the small town of Newmarket, Ontario.

You'll always be a Canuck to us, Jim!

Joshua Jackson.

Sure, to you he's the mysterious and complicated Pacey Witter from Dawson's Creek.

But to me, he is and always will be, Charlie Conway. Master of the triple-deek. Captain of the Mighty Ducks hockey team, and one of the great Canadian actors of his generation.

Ryan Reynolds.

Maybe it's because there are no good Canadian superheroes (with the exception of Wolverine, of course). But the fact that Deadpool is a born and bred Vancouverite just brings a smile to my face.

Your country loves you, Ryan.

Celine Dion.

If God could sing, she'd sound like Celine Dion.

Don't let the fact that she's had one of the most impressive Las Vegas residencies of all time fool you, Celine is Canadian through and through. French-Canadian, in fact, hailing from the town of Charlamagne, Quebec.

Alanis Morissette.

While we're on the subject, Alanis Morissette actually was the voice of God in Kevin Smith's cult hit Dogma.

'You Oughtta Know' that Alanis Morissette is one of the most successful female artists of all time; Canadian or otherwise.

Carly Rae Jepsen.

Carly Rae Jepsen is so much more than just 'Call Me Maybe'. Over the past few years, she's proven herself to be a capable musician and a true artist at heart.

She's yet another Canadian who grew up in the foothills of the Rockies.

Ryan Gosling

Of all the many incredibly talented people on this list, I'm most proud of the fact that Ryan Gosling is Canadian. Not only that, but he's also from my home town of London, Ontario!

Even from his early days on Are You Afraid of the Dark? I knew he was going to be a star!

Dan Levy.

On top of being the co-creator and star of Schitt's Creek, Dan is also the real-life son of famed Canadian comedian (and co-star) Eugene Levy!

The father-son duo is a formidable comedic pairing and both have roots in the city of Toronto, Ontario.

Antoni Porowski.

So cards on the table: I have a serious man-crush on Antoni Porowski.

Without any argument, he is the best part of the Fab 5 as well as the number one reason I continue to watch Queer Eye.

Rachel McAdams.

Rachel McAdams has had her share of iconic roles over the years. The Mean Girls star might walk like an American, but that accent is Oh, Canada!

Rachel, like her fellow costar in The Notebook, is also from London, ON.

Shawn Mendes.

Instagram | @shawnmendes

Shawn Mendes is one of the most popular young artists of the moment. His guitar talents are so incendiary that even the great John Mayer has taken notice.

Shawn's hometown is also in the GTA, in the small town of Pickering, ON.

The Weeknd.

Instagram | @theweeknd

Before The Weeknd blew up, he was simply known as Abel Tesfaye. Like Drake, Abel is a product of the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) and often thought to be an American.

His tantalizing falsetto is one of the country's finest exports, right up there with Maple Syrup and politeness.

Seth Rogen.

Instagram | @sethrogen

Seth Rogen absolutely personifies the West Coast of Canada. The actor/comedian has come a long way since his days on the set of Freaks and Geeks but has never once forgotten where he came from.

He's a proud Canadian and a Vancouver Canucks fan.
