Stray Cat Follows Woman Inside Store To Beg For Food And Gets Adopted Instead

A stray kitty in Mexico recently got way more than he bargained for when he followed a woman into the supermarket, intending to beg for some food, and ended up getting a new home instead.

As Bored Panda reported, 33-year-old primary school teacher Tania Lizbeth Santos Coy Tova recorded her amusing interaction with the white, tailless feline who she met outside of a local grocery store in Piedras Negras.

At the beginning of the video, Tania notices the cat watching her approach the supermarket.

Visibly dirty and dishevelled, it's obvious this is a homeless street cat, but he certainly appears friendly enough. So, she briefly stops to give his head a little scratch before continuing towards the doors of the store.

However, she soon notices she has a follower.

The cat has fallen into step beside her and is basically leading her inside the supermarket.

If you've ever owned a cat, I'd say this is pretty much the exact same behavior they exhibit when they know it's dinner time and they see you heading towards the kitchen.

Tania clearly understood this as well, and realized the poor kitty was obviously hungry for some food.

That fact became even more apparent once the two journeyed inside.

This time, there's no question that this little kitty is leading the way as he directs Tania towards a food stall containing bags and bags of cat food.

Although a stray, he knows exactly which brand he prefers, and helpfully paw-points to the product he would appreciate Tania buying for him.

The video of Tania's interaction with the clever street cat was uploaded to Instagram earlier this month.

But it wasn't uploaded to her own Instagram account. Instead, it was shared to the account belonging to this very kitty, who has since been bestowed the name "Conejo", meaning "rabbit" in Spanish.

Why? Well, as his page description helpfully explains, "My name is Rabbit because I am a cat that has no tail!"

As it turns out, Tania wasn't able to simply walk away after buying Rabbit some dinner.

She knew this little cutie definitely needed a home. After all, he was sweet, affectionate, and obviously incredibly smart.

So instead of just abandoning him outside of that supermarket again, she decided to adopt him and welcome him into her family.

Since he had been living on the streets, Rabbit had some health problems that needed to be addressed.

“Let me tell you that before Rabbit was very handsome in the photos, we had to first heal many wounds he had," Tania told Bored Panda. "We do not know if it was due to mistreatment by people or simply because he was in fights with other street animals. He allowed himself to be touched and carried, but his countenance was very sad and fearful all the time, even before he came to our house."

She continued, "We didn’t have any animals, but I think he taught us a great lesson that we must show respect, love, and empathy towards other beings."

In just a few short weeks, Rabbit has become quite accustomed to his new life as a fur baby.

On his Instagram page, there are several photos including ones of him enjoying car rides and even accompanying his hooman to work.

And, as seen above, he's made a new friend in his favorite toy, René, who he apparently loves to lie around with and hug all day.
