Katie Holmes Gets Candid On Keeping Suri Out Of The Public Eye

It has been impressive, all things considered, how well Katie Holmes has managed to keep her daughter out of the public eye over the last 14 years.

She recently opened up in an interview with InStyle about some of the strategies she has used to maintain her daughter's privacy.

Katie Holmes has managed to keep her 14-year-old daughter, Suri, out of the spotlight. And considering that both of Suri's parents are big names in Hollywood, it's really quite impressive.

Back in 2006, Katie married one of the biggest names in the film industry, Tom Cruise.

Five months after marrying him, they welcomed their daughter, Suri, and Katie virtually vanished from Hollywood.

She quietly focused on motherhood for years before launching a fashion label with her close friend, Jeanne Yang.

Not long after that, in 2012, she divorced Tom, and has since been raising Suri on her own.

Although to the rest of us it seems like between 2006 and now, Katie ghosted us, it's easy to forgive knowing she has single-handedly been raising her daughter.

In November 2019, Katie opened up in an interview with Elle UK about what it was like parenting in her 20s.

She confessed that she has no regrets about having a baby in her 20s — in fact, she was happy about it.

“I was happy to become a mom in my twenties,” she said.

She explained that throughout every stage of Suri's life so far, it has been a good pairing with where she has been in life and as a mother as well.

“It’s been nice that our ages fit,” she continued.

“How do I put this? Every age that my child has been and my age at that time has been a good match," she said. "We kind of grew up together."

In a more recent interview with InStyle, Katie revealed that she has made it her mission to protect Suri from the spotlight — which is why we don't see much of her.

“We were followed a lot when [Suri] was little," she explained.

She then revealed that because she wanted Suri to be able to spend time outside, they would have to do it at strategic times of the day to avoid being followed.

"I just wanted her outside," Katie explained.

"So I would walk her around to find parks at, like, six in the morning when nobody would see us."

But, it turns out that like her mom and dad, Suri has always been rather charming toward the paparazzi.

“But there’s one video where I’m holding her — she was two at the time — and she starts waving at the cameras. She’s pretty special.”

“My biggest goal has always been to nurture [Suri] into her individuality".

"To make sure she is 100 percent herself and strong, confident, and able. And to know it.”

She went on to explain why she chose to raise Suri in New York City as opposed to Los Angeles.

“Yes, it’s a little too exposed at times, and we work hard to maneuver and navigate," she said.

"But what I love about New York is that for me and my child, this is our vibe. When there are 25 things to do every night, it takes you out of your own thing."

“I’ll take a class at Broadway Dance Center. I’ll go to the Joyce Theater."

"I do hot yoga and boxing classes. I have a book club. The city has a lot to offer, and I use it."

"And you know what else I discovered? There’s a place not far from my house that does foot massages until midnight."

"That’s what New York offers!," she joked.

Anyway, Katie and Suri seem like the ultimate mother-daughter duo. And for living in NYC, Katie is doing an amazing job preserving Suri's anonymity.
