First U.S. Coronavirus Death Confirmed In Washington State

Washington state health officials have confirmed that one person has died from the coronavirus, marking the first death from the disease in the U.S.

During a press conference, President Trump provided an update on the virus and confirmed that the victim was a King County woman in her late 50s with a high medical risk.

Trump also announced there are 22 people in the U.S. who have tested positive for the coronavirus.

However, he assured the press that healthy Americans should be able to "fully recover", should they contract the virus.

Dr. Robert Redfield, the director of the CDC, said the American who died seemed to have contracted coronavirus from "community spread".

This means the person did not contract the disease from travel or from a known patient.

Redfield also emphasized that the risk of other Americans contracting the virus is currently "low", and advised that citizens "go on with their normal lives."

During that same conference, Vice President Mike Pence announced the U.S. is increasing travel bans in response to the outbreak.

Pence, who Trump placed in charge of coronavirus coordination, said Americans are discouraged from traveling to parts of Italy and South Korea. Additionally, the U.S. has banned all travel to Iran.

“We want to lower the amount of travel to and from the most impacted areas,” Alex Azar, the secretary of Health and Human Services, added. “This is a basic containment strategy.”
