Robert Downey Jr's Mother 'Was Horrified' By His Blackface In 'Tropic Thunder'

Ladies and gentlemen get this: we gave Robert Downey Jr. an Oscar nomination for this role. A role that even then, was considered racist, but not enough people were getting educated on that fact to know it!

We didn't know any better, it came out in the far off, almost ancient year of 2008!

The year was 2008...

And a little movie called Tropic Thunder was hitting theaters. It was fun, it was gut bustlingly hilarious, and it had a great cast of stars.

And we all know now that Robert Downey Jr is the best thing to happen since sliced bread.

But now... we need to take a look at his role in Tropic Thrunder.

Because he did BlackfaceHe played a serious method actor playing a black man.

RDJ was on the Joe Rogan podcast (here in 2020) where he talked about his experience with the film.

"‘Bobby, I’m telling ya, I have a bad feeling about this.’” he recalled his conversation with his mother at the time. “I was like, ‘Yeah me too, mom.'"

"When Ben called and said, ‘Hey I’m doing this thing,’ you know I think Sean Penn had passed on it or something. Possibly wisely. And I thought, ‘Yeah, I’ll do that and I’ll do that after Iron Man.’"

"Then I started thinking, ‘This is a terrible idea, wait a minute.’"

But apparently, it wasn't enough of a bad idea for him to let it stop him!
