Ricky Gervais Slammed For 'Transphobic' Tweets Ahead Of The Golden Globes

Comedian Ricky Gervais is no stranger to controversy and definitely isn't afraid to seek it out in his career. This time, he's facing backlash for perceived transphobic tweets.

Ricky initially started a controversy when he replied to a Twitter user discussing the recent JK Rowling controversy.

While the account that Ricky responded to was a parody account that was being sarcastic, it was unclear whether Ricky meant his reply or not.

When a fan suggested that Ricky try being kind, he responded in a way many felt was furthering transphobic stereotypes.

Many fans felt that Ricky was perpetuating the idea that trans women are just men who are pretending to be women for nefarious purposes.

Ricky is facing a lot of backlash.

"Yo we all know Ricky Gervais is a transphobic piece of [expletive] maybe stop retweeting him," one Twitter user wrote.

Ricky has now insisted in new tweets that he believes trans women are women, and was specifically talking about cis men taking advantage.

Some believe he's only doing that as a "copout."

Ricky Gervais is set to host the Golden Globes on January 5th, 2020, although many are wondering if this recent controversy will cost him the gig.
