'Legally Blonde' Almost Didn't Cast Reese Witherspoon: 'They Thought I Was A Shrew'

Legally Blonde is a classic film. It's empowering for women, it's hilarious, it's romantic, and all around everything, people need in a film.

Plus, it has Reese Witherspoon, so seriously, what's not to love?

Well, according to Witherspoon herself, it wasn't always love with the producers. In fact, they didn't want her for the part.

Imagine not having Witherspoon play the part of Elle Woods?

It would have absolutely been a travesty.

The idea of anyone else playing the role just doesn't compute. Probably because she did such a great performance.

So, why did they almost pass on the opportunity?

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer

"They thought I was a shrew," she said. "My manager finally called and said, ‘You’ve got to go meet with the studio head because he will not approve you."

She described it further by saying:

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer

"He thinks you really are your character from Election and that you’re repellent.’ And then I was told to dress sexy."

Which, let's be honest, that would so not fly in today's day and age.

"And you’re 23, you have a baby at home, you need the money and you’re being told that by people who know what they’re doing."

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer

"It’s funny to think of all the things we were told to do back then because now you’re thinking, ‘Oh God, if somebody told my daughter to do that, she’d be like, I really hope you’re joking.’"

Personally, I'm glad they picked her. Aren't you?
