The Venom sequel is coming for us, but production and filming have only just begun.
With that, the conversation has begun around the makers and producers about the nature of the movie, and whether or not the movie will be getting an R-rating.

'Venom' Sequel May Get An R-Rating
Venom producer Matt Tolmach, had a lot to say about the potential of 'Venom' becoming an R-rated film now that 'Joker' has found success.

“Our franchise exists as it is, and I don’t think anybody is looking to just say, ‘Hey, they [did it]!’ We have a place in the world. So it isn’t like suddenly everybody’s considering what to do with the rating.” he said.
“For a very long time, that was the narrative. And Deadpool sort of wrestled that to the turf, and then Logan, but for a long time, that was considered totally forbidden,”

“So you know, I think it’s the greatest thing in the world that R-rated movies are being embraced by massive audiences. And it just means that there are more opportunities for that kind of storytelling.”
Producer Avi Arad chimed in, adding that the beauty of movies is that you don't need an R-rated film to show what a character is about.

“To define what Venom is as violence. He’s not. He’s the lethal protector, which is a very different thing. We want to be really true to the comics. Today, in CGI and stuff, we can make Venom bite your head.”
But the point isn't that you see the violence, it's the understanding of who Venom is.

“But we don’t have to show the head going side to side like, ‘That actually tastes good.’ It’s irrelevant. What’s relevant is that you finally understood, is that a bad guy? Yeah.”
So, will the sequel get an R-rating? We don't know quite yet, but the makers of Venom don't seem too worried about it.
So long as it becomes a great movie, that's what matters to them.
