Sarah Hyland Shares Photo Of Herself She 'Hated' To Inspire Invisible Illness Warriors

Modern Family star, Sarah Hyland, has openly spoken about her physical and mental health struggles in the past — she's even posted a photo of her transplant scar on social media before.

But now she's getting even more real with her fans by posting a photo of herself that she once "hated" to hopefully inspire invisible illness warriors.

According to Sarah, at the age of 28, she has had 16 surgeries.

She's had two kidney transplants, laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis, and surgery to correct an abdominal hernia.

In 2012, when Sarah was 21-years-old, she had her first kidney transplant.

Her father gave her one of his kidneys — but unfortunately, she was far from being out of the woods.

In the years that followed, she would sporadically mention in interviews that she was still suffering from medical complications, but she never got into specifics.

But she eventually opened up in an interview — revealing the full story.

She explained that some years after her first surgery, her body started to reject the kidney.

"When a family member gives you a second chance at life and it fails, it almost feels like it's your fault," she said.

“We did all of these tests and all of these treatments to try and save the kidney,” she explained.

But she said the doctors described her situation as "a house that's caught on fire".

“You can't un-burn a house," she said.

She revealed that her physical took a major toll on her mental health as well.

"I was really depressed. For a long time I was contemplating suicide," she admitted.

"I had gone through 26 years of always being a burden — of always having to be looked after," she continued.

"It's a really helpless feeling."

Luckily, come summer of 2017, Sarah found out that her brother was a match.

"When a second family member — someone you're supposed to look after, like a little brother, wants to give you a third chance at life, it's scary because you don't want to fail them."

She and her brother went through with the surgery and Sarah's prognosis was, fortunately, positive.

Since then, Sarah has been a lot more candid and transparent with fans about her "flaws," physical and otherwise.

She posted a photo on Instagram, showing off her transplant scars, encouraging everyone to own their imperfections.

"#showyourscars" she captioned the photo.

She also tweeted about needing to wear Spanx sometimes to conceal her "transplant bulge".

Trolls dragged her for admitting to wearing two pairs of Spanx under her dress at this year's Oscars — considering how thin she is. But she revealed that she actually wears Spanx because of her transplant scar.

Anyway, a couple of days ago Sarah shared a photo of herself to Instagram that she claims she "hated," alongside an inspiring caption.

"To my fellow #invisibleillness warriors. It’s ok to be insecure about your body," she wrote.

"Just remember to check in with yourself at least once a day and say thank you."

"Our bodies have endured unfathomable feats that our minds barely have time to comprehend what has actually happened."

She explained that after everything her body has gone through, it hasn't been easy for her skin to "bounce" right back to normal.

"With inflammation, excess water gain, and medications, my skin has a hard time bouncing back," she said.

But instead of feeling self-conscious over it, she chose to see it as a point of power.

"I saw this picture and HATED it but quickly readjusted my attitude and decided to celebrate it."

"Love yourself and be patient. We are all stronger than we think we are," she concluded.
