J.C. Penney Employees Might Miss Thanksgiving Thanks To 2 PM Opening

By this point, brazen shoppers have spent years earning Black Friday its infamous reputation in the retail world. As store employees steel themselves for a new round of sale-induced chaos, only time will tell what will emerge this year.

But while many of them might treat Thanksgiving as a quiet period of respite among their families before the big day, it seems that recent years have made this less possible.

Apparently taking note of the customers willing to camp out and miss their own Thanksgiving dinners for an advantage in rushes for doorbuster sales, some stores have decided to start their Black Friday events on Thanksgiving Day itself.

And it seems like no store is getting a jump on this trend more than J.C. Penney.

It's no secret that J.C. Penney has found itself in uncertain times lately.

As Fortune reported, the retailer has had to restructure itself repeatedly throughout the last decade and especially had to do so in the wake of its CEO's sudden departure last October.

Add that to the fact that it's featured net losses of $3.5 billion since 2010 and — as Business Insider reported — prepared to close at least 27 stores this year, and it's hard to say that things have been looking good for the company.

For this reason, it's not hard to see why massive Black Friday crowds would be so attractive to J.C. Penney's management.

This likely factored heavily into their decision to open most stores at 2 pm on Thanksgiving last year.

As USA Today reported, they fully intend on continuing that practice this year and having stores remain open until 10 pm on Black Friday.

Those who make it through the store's doors first will be the most likely to benefit from a coupon giveaway.

As USA Today reported, these deals could range from $10 off a purchase to a $500 shopping spree.

But whatever you may think of the idea of people skipping Thanksgiving to take advantage of these deals, it certainly seems like an unfortunate situation for the employees who have to deal with them.

At best, the employees involved may be able to partake in a Thanksgiving lunch before they have to rush off to work.

Not only does that cut what should be a pleasant holiday to remind us of what we take for granted short, but it does so in favor of what almost certainly promises to be an incredibly stressful shift.

And while we can certainly acknowledge that home is the last place that some people might want to find themselves on Thanksgiving, it scarcely seems like an improvement to swap out tense arguments with family members for dealing with screaming strangers while they tear each other apart.
