Family Shares Touching Tribute to Talk Show Host Jerry Springer

His family confirmed in a statement that he died peacefully at his Chicago home on Thursday morning.

According to a source, Jerry was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer a few months ago, and his health worsened this week.

The family representative Jene Galvin said, "Jerry's ability to connect with people was at the heart of his success in everything he tried, whether that was politics, broadcasting, or just joking with people on the street who wanted a photo or a word."

He continued while talking to TMZ, "He's irreplaceable, and his loss hurts immensely. But memories of his intellect, heart, and humor will live on."

The statement continued, "To remember Jerry, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, you consider following his spirit and make a donation or commit to an act of kindness to someone in need or a worthy advocacy organization."

Steve Wilkos, a popular favorite on The Jerry Springer Show before starting his daytime show, paid tribute to the late star.

Wilkos said in a statement to PEOPLE, "Other than my father, Jerry was the most influential man in my life. Everything I have today I owe to Jerry. He was the smartest, most generous, kindest person I've ever known. My wife and I are devastated. We will miss him terribly."

Maury Povich was devastated while talking to PEOPLE, "I am shocked and saddened by the passing of Jerry. He was not only a colleague but a friend."

He continued, "We worked for the same company for decades, he was joyful, smart, and, in his own way, a unique showman. I will miss him."

Piers Morgan paid tribute to Jerry on Twitter, writing, "Jeez, this sucks. RIP Jerry Springer, 79."

He continued, "TV icon & such an intelligent, warm, funny man. Loved working with him (on@AGT), loved hanging out with him (we lived in same hotel for 2yrs), loved arguing with him (he loved his politics), loved everything about him. Gutting."

Loni Love, a comedian, posted a nice photo of them together.

"What I loved about Jerry Springer was the way he connected with people in a unique and authentic manner. This is why as a talk show host he excelled… condolences to his family and fans on his passing.." she wrote.

Nick Foley, one of the best news anchors, tweeted: "His shows over the years could certainly raise some eyebrows but on the few occasions I got to briefly interview him over the years #JerrySpringer was always a class act and a pleasure to speak to. #RIP."

The co-host Whoopi Goldberg, talking on The View show, stated she "loved" Springer's show. "I'm not afraid to say it," she went on to explain. "He was a great guy and really fun, and that show is as crazy as it gets, but there's a place for everyone here."

Jerry was photographed enjoying a St. Patrick's Day parade in Ybor City only weeks before his death. He wrote on social media, "Thank you to @mortampa for a great time at the Rough Riders St. Patrick's Parade in Ybor City! I’ll be back."

His final television performance was on last season's The Masked Singer when he played The Beetle and sang a Frank Sinatra classic.

Springer is survived by his deaf and blind daughter Katie and his sister Evelyn.

In a tweet on Thursday, Springer was praised as a great friend by David Hasselhoff. He said: "I never thought I would lose a special friend who actually subbed for me as Captain Hook in the Wimbledon pantomime."
