We Finally Know What The Live-Action “Little Mermaid” Characters Will Look Like

The posters for the live-action The Little Mermaid have finally been released by Disney, and we've already formed a love-hate relationship with the characters.

The posters give us a first look at Halle Bailey as Ariel, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Sebastian (voiced by David Deegs), Flounder (Jacob Tremblay), and Scuttle (Awkwafina).

The live-action remake is just one month away from its much-awaited release. Until then these colorful posters by Disney are enough to satisfy our cravings.

While a few characters are exactly how we'd imagined them to be, some of our most beloved characters have been robbed of their charm and made to look disturbingly realistic.

Sebastian the crab is designed almost too realistically, but with his eyes bulging out of his shell, it seems like Mr. Krabs from SpongeBob SquarePants was the inspiration behind his appearance.

Scuttle, who was originally a male seagull in the animated version, can be seen as a female diving bird in the posters. If it's any consolation, the makers have kept the fork (or the dinglehopper) at least.

The perky-looking royal angel fish called Flounder, Ariel's closest companion, has been changed into a dismal blue fish lacking both its vibrant colors and the classic smile that made the character so precious.

Halle Bailey looks ever so graceful while being captured as Ariel looking towards the sky with her braided red hair and successfully communicates the longing of her character to step into the outside world in the poster.

The mighty King Triton (Javier Bardem) can be seen emerging from the water wearing his sea-shell armor and holding the trident with a look that tells you he's ready to fight.

Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King) charms in his classic white shirt while posing on a ship as he stares fixedly at the sea.

It's Melissa McCarthy portraying the character of Ursula with her signature blue eyeshadow and white updo that won our hearts and we can't wait to see the delightful actress channel her inner villain on the big screen.

Fans waiting for the movie have been quick to share their reactions, with one user commenting, "No offense, but these versions of Sebastian, Flounder, and Scuttle look so cursed and uncanny."

Amongst all the characters it was Flounder's appearance that garnered the largest uproar with one user saying, "Did Flounder get COVID?" while another complained, "Y'all did Flounder wrong!"

Along with the posters, Disney also shared a new trailer for The Little Mermaid, presenting Ariel and Flounder swimming towards the shipwreck where they find the lost treasure and meet Ursula.

Melissa McCarthy reposted the Ursula poster on her Instagram and surprised fans by giving them a sneak-peek at her scary and dramatic side.

She captioned the picture saying, "One month until I get to share this fever dream with everyone!! Eyebrows inspired by Missy McCarthy circa 1988 !!! #TheLittleMermaid in theaters May 26!”

Melissa's fans shared their love and adoration for her character standing in front of a deep sea backdrop with her vicious tentacles occupying the frame.

One of her followers commented on the picture saying, "Don’t know what I’m more excited for. My favorite childhood movie being turned into live action? Or the fact the Sookie is Ursula.”

The Little Mermaid is all set to hit the theaters on May 26, 2023 and judging by the audience's reactions so far we can only hope it doesn't disappoint.
