97-Year-Old Dick Van Dyke's Car Keys Taken Away by His 51-Year-Old Wife

97-year-old Hollywood star Dick Van Dyke was found by police and rescue officers to have crashed his 2018 Lexus LS 500 vehicle into a gate in Malibu.

The Mary Poppins star is said to have received stitches to his lips due to slamming his face against the steering wheel upon impact with the gate. The police report that Van Dyke was found bleeding from his mouth and nose when help arrived at the scene.

First responders at the scene are ruling out the possibility of drunk driving or drug usage, but the officers have reportedly requested that Van Dyke retake his driving test.

Van Dyke's wife, Arlene Silver, is reportedly taking no chances after the accident on March 15. Reports from Radar Online say that the 51-year-old wife has seized his car keys from him.

A source close to the couple revealed that Van Dyke's driving on the road is no longer safe for himself and other road users. "Dick's gotten to the point where he needs to be taken off the road — for his own safety and the safety of others." Further adding, "Arlene is terrified if she doesn't take the keys away now, it may be too late!"

The source also stated that Van Dyke isn't happy about his wife's decision to keep him from driving. "Dick is chafing at Arlene's concerns. He's aware of his age, but he's determined to maintain his independence."

Reporters got comments from the car crash victim, and he shared that he was "fine" but felt "sore all over."

The Diagnosis: Murder star also revealed that his car's airbags failed to deploy — resulting in stitches he needed for his lips. In his words, "The airbags did not deploy, so I just had a face plant right in the steering wheel, and it just made me a little dumber."

When asked about his current health conditions and obvious concerns from people around him, Van Dyke dodged the question and said, "I'm 97 — all my friends are dead."

While Van Dyke couldn't care much about the accident, Arlene is scared crazy over her husband's safety. An unnamed insider stated, "She [Arlene] doesn't want to press her luck. She loves her husband very much and doesn't want to see him die in the driver's seat!"

Van Dyke's recent incident in Malibu comes almost ten years after his severe previous accident outside Calabasas. In August 2013, the veteran actor and his wife were seated in the car when it caught fire.

At the time, TMZ reported that Van Dyke said the car made funny noises before erupting into flames. In the report, Van Dyke said, "It just started making a noise, and I thought I had a flat at first, then it started to smoke, then it burned to a crisp."

Luckily for him and his wife, they were rescued by a fireman, a cop, and a nurse who were just passing by — they came out unscathed and unhurt.

The luck didn't extend to his vehicle, as his Jaguar burned down to its frames after the star actor and his wife made it out safely.

Although 97, Van Dyke is pretty much an active man for his age. The star was recently unveiled in Fox's The Masked Singer show as the man beneath the Gnome costume.

Giving tips on maintaining a youthful vigor, Van Dick admitted his wife has a hand in it. He said, "Genes, I guess, for one thing. Having a beautiful young wife half my age to take care of me - that works!"

Even at an older age, Van Dyke hasn't quit on exercises. The actor revealed he still hits the gym three days a week and has written a book, Keep Moving, about staying fit as a person ages.

Being a pro-gym supporter, Van Dyke advises younger and aging men to be consistent with their workout routine. He said, "And I advise everybody to do that, because that's what ages people — it's just a stiffening up and not exercising their muscles and their lungs. Exercise is the answer."

Speaking on how he maintains his positive attitude, Van Dyke says his wife taught it to him. "My positive attitude, I get that from my wife."
