Shawn Lee Brunson tried his best to escape the hands of the law in a stolen vehicle last month, but luck wasn't on his side at all, as he crashed into another car at a Baltimore intersection last month.
Due to the severe impact of the crash, a building close to the scene gave way and further complicated the issue.
The February 8 accident flew over an abandoned brick building and killed one pedestrian while injuring five innocent people.
The 33-year-old criminal and driver of the stolen 2017 Hyundai Sonata was nabbed and charged with car theft on February 7th.
The footage of the unfortunate accident was released from the Maryland Office of the Attorney General. The event happened the next day after Brunson's arrest.
The chase happened after Baltimore police saw the stolen car in Baltimore's East North Avenue area. Upon investigation attempts and moves to get closer to the scene, the driver took off.
It was during the pursuit that the driver rammed into another car, and then they both slammed the building.
The 54-year-old pedestrian was buried under the debris of the collapsed building and pronounced dead upon arrival of emergency services. Five other casualties, including drivers of both cars, sustained multiple injuries and were instantly rushed to the nearby hospital.
In the latest news from CBS, the officers involved in the pursuit are under investigation by the Independent Investigations Division of the Office of the Attorney General. Their identities or names were not disclosed.
The footage from the scene was released from body-worn cameras by the cops and surveillance cameras around the intersection.
One of the officers was advised to end the pursuit before the crash happened in the footage.
The Baltimore City State's Attorney's Office holds the final decision on whether or not to prosecute the officers involved in the incident.to prosecute the officers involved in the incident.
A member of the Baltimore community, Dayna Waheedah, who knew the victim personally, told DailyMail that he was a gentleman who was respected in the community.
Waheedah continued that he would collect medals and take them to scrap yards. He also had trucks that transported people in the community,
"He was a good spirit."
Waheedah continued.
"And although he did not have a full-time "job" he was always doing something that's how he made his living. A friend of mine used to work with him doing odd jobs, cleaning out evictions and basically whatever needed to be done in the community."
According to Waheedah, the collapsed building was formerly a restaurant called Northstar and it already had major fire damages and was unoccupied before the vehicles collided with it.
Waheedah has lived in that community for about eight years and attested that the building had been on the verge of collapsing for the last 15 years. She added that the government should have demolished the structure years ago.
According to slate, one of the safest ways to catch a car thief without having to chase them or kill people is to simply grab a photo of the license plate or that of the suspect.
Fincher is not the first victim of a wild car chase. Thousands of innocent pedestrians and bystanders have been killed in high-speed pursuits.
So many calls have been put through to various police departments around the country to put an end to a car chase and encourage a positive attitude with strict compliance to these rules among police officers.
