The actor, who played the late King of Rock in the Baz Lurhmann film, fought back the tears as he paid tribute to the Presley family and accepted the award.

Austin Paid Tribute To The Presleys

Butler, who still spoke to the ceremony in the Elvis drawl he developed for Baz Luhrmann's film, said, "This means the world to me." He added that he "hopes he made them proud" as he paid tribute to the Presley family for providing details about Elvis' life for the biopic.

Cate Blanchett Bags Best Leading Actress

The biopic Tar's only significant victory of the evening went to Cate Blanchett for her performance in the role of Best Leading Actress.

She accepted the award while sobbing and thanked her mother and the director Todd Field, mentioning that Blanchett had also said that 2022 was an "extraordinary year for women."

She continued by saying that it had become clear that women's experiences are not "monolithic" and that playing Lydia Tar "was a dangerous and career-ending potential undertaking."

Award-Winning Movies

The Banshees of Inisherin came in second place with five awards, including Best British Film and Best Supporting Actor and Actress, while Netflix's German war epic All Quiet On The Western Front took home seven awards overall, including Best Film.

The Most Nominated Non-English Movie

The movie, based on Erich Maria Remarque's 1929 novel of the same name, shares the record for most BAFTA nominations for a non-English language film with Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (2001).

The cast includes Felix Kammerer, Albrecht Schuch, Daniel Brühl, Sebastian Hülk, Aaron Hilmer, Edin Hasanovic, and Devid Striesow under the direction of Edward Berger.

In his opening monologue, Richard referred to the infamous slap that Will Smith received at the Oscars the year before, promising the audience that "on my watch, no one gets slapped tonight."
