It's been years since TV personality, Steve Irwin, died, but his legacy lives on in his 19-year-old son, Robert. The wildlife zookeeper opened up about the connection between him and his late father through their shared love for the ocean.
Robert Irwin Spoke About The Special Bond With His Beloved Late Father, Steve Irwin
Connecting Through The Ocean
In an interview with Adelaide Now, the younger Irwin said his father taught him about the ocean at a young age, and he continued exploring the waters to stay connected to Steve. Robert uses some of Steve's old surfboards during his morning exercise.
His Way Of Conserving Nature
Although embracing the ocean is Robert's way of connecting to his father, it's also his preferred niche of conservation. He said,
"I have found it to be my own individual way to push a conservation message."
Embracing Photography Like His Father
Robert and Steve shared more than a love for the ocean. Their passions included photography. The younger zookeeper revealed that he takes pictures to keep his father's passion and dream alive.
The Importance Of Environmental Conservation
Photography was more than a hobby for Steve Irwin. He encouraged conservation and a love for the environment as much as he did. Unfortunately, the crocodile hunter died on September 4, 2006 doing what he loved.
The Tragic Loss Of Steve Irwin
The older Irwin was in the middle of a wildlife documentary shoot when a stingray bard pierced his chest and deposited its deadly venom into him. He was survived by his wife, Terri, and their two children, Bindi and Robert.
Celebrating His Parent's Life
Earlier this year, Robert shared a heart-warming tribute on his parent's wedding anniversary as he praised Steve for being a good example to him and his sister. Robert said that he's proud to be his parent's son, as their union created a long-lasting legacy.
Researching Nature With His Family
Robert's quest to preserve his father's legacy started when he was old enough to work in the zoo. He lives with his mother and sibling at the Australia Zoo, and continues rescuing animals and researching nature.
All Living Species Deserve Love And Attention
Like his father, Robert believes all animals and living species deserve love and attention. The 19-year-old said that creating positive change in the environment is helpful for humans as a form of respect.
Still Looking Up To His Father
When reflecting on his father's legacy, Robert said that he's grateful for experiencing his father even for a short period.
"I'll always just feel so lucky that I had the most amazing dad in the world, who was literally a superhero."
