Rupert Grint Absent from Funeral of 'Harry Potter' Star Robbie Coltrane

Rupert Grint has openly discussed the passing of his Harry Potter co-stars. Harry Potter co-star Robbie Coltrane's funeral was missed by Rupert Grint, who explained it.

Before he passed from multiple organ failure in October of last year, actor Robbie was well-known for his role as Rubeus Hagrid, the half-giant, half-human gamekeeper at Hogwarts.

Rupert, 34, who played Ron Weasley in the movies, claims he looked up to Robbie but declined to attend his burial last year.

After Robbie Coltrane passed away in October, the Ron Weasley actor posted his homage. When he was 13 years old, Richard Harris, who played Dumbledore in the first two movies, suddenly passed away too. Grint was a close friend of Snape actor Alan Rickman, who passed away also from cancer in 2016.

Rupert said of his older co-stars in an interview with GQ, "They all had this kind of subconscious presence in my life... Robbie, losing him was particularly tough. He really was the most wonderful being."

His Reasons For Not Attending The Funeral

But he chose not to attend his funeral, stating, "I don't claim to know him outside of work." Rupert used Instagram to post some touching tributes to Robbie when the actor passed away last year.

He was a "giant-hearted man who was still looking out for us, decades later," according to how Rupert described him.

The Cause Of Robbie's Death

Sadly, the 72-year-old Scotsman actor passed away in October of last year. The cause of death mentioned on Robbie's death certificate was multiple organ failure, diabetes, obesity, and sepsis, among other illnesses.

The Harry Potter star acknowledged that it was difficult to think about as a 13-year-old when actor Richard Harris, who played headmaster Albus Dumbledore in the first two films, passed away.

Rupert added that Richard's passing in 2002 at 72 following a fight with cancer was the first loss he had ever known.

In a hotel, while promoting the second film, he was told about the death of Richard Harris which he recalled as a "hard thing to contemplate" given his age.

Later, the 82-year-old Michael Gambon took over for Richard in the role. It follows Rupert's endorsement of a Harry Potter TV show amid rumors that studio executives are already thinking about adapting the series.

The actor, who appeared in all eight films as the wizard's friend Ron Weasley, said he thought it "worked incredibly well."
