The ace guitarist was born in Denville, New Jersey, on 13 December 1949. His real name was Tom Miller. Tom Verlaine was his stage name.
Verlaine died in New York City surrounded by close friends and loved ones.
The icon was the co-founder of the seminal proto-punk band Television, who has also influenced many bands during his time playing at ultra-cool downtown New York music venue CBGB alongside the Ramones, Patti Smith, and Talking Heads in the rock era of the 70s.

Tension soon emerged between Verlaine and fellow band member Richard Lloyd, which led Television to disband after its second body of work titled Adventure.
Verlaine was considered one of the greatest guitarists of the 20th century alongside icons like Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Eddie Van Halen, and others.
However, in 1992, the group came together for a self-titled album produced for Capitol Records and a couple of live appearances.
“We wanted to strip everything down further, away from the showbiz theatricality of the glitter bands, and away from blues-iness and boogie,” Television co-founder Richard Hell wrote in his autobiography, I Dreamed I Was a Very Clean Tramp.
The late Verlaine released eight solo albums, with his 1981 sophomore album Dreamtime debuting at 177 on the Billboard album chart.
Hoffs and Idol eulogized Verlaine and acknowledged he made music that influenced the US and UK punk scenes.
His ex, Patti Smith, posted a picture of them together on her Instagram following the news of his passing and wrote, "Farewell Tom, aloft the Omega."
The pair, who met in Delaware prep school, eventually dropped out and went into the East Village, where they worked in bookstores and wrote poetry together.
His publicist described the late act as "a sly wit" who was noted for his angular lyricism and pointed lyrical asides. He could shake each string to its truest emotion.
