Lily Collins Describes The Emotional Rollercoaster Of Having An Estranged Relationship With Her Father

As the star of Netflix's Emily in Paris, Lily Collins is a star in her own right, but she is also a member of Hollywood royalty thanks to her famous parents, Phil and Jill Collins. Lily is the offspring of the renowned performer, Genesis frontman, and the American socialite. The 33-year-old still has a close relationship with her mother and always writes her father a heartfelt birthday letter, although she doesn't always get along with him.

Collins has frequently discussed how her famous father, British singer Phil Collins, was not the kind of father she expected, and we may all take a cue from her path to forgiveness.

Lily Collins authored a memoir titled Lily Collins Unfiltered: No Shame, No Regrets, Just Me in 2017, in which she discussed her father's absence from her childhood in public for the first time. She wrote, according to People,

"Because my dad was often gone, I never wanted to do anything that would make him stay away even longer. I became extra careful about what I said and how I said it, afraid he'd think I was angry or didn't love him. And the truth is, I was angry. I missed him and wanted him there."

The actress from Emily in Paris clarified the situation in the final paragraph of her open letter by saying,

"I forgive you for not always being there when I needed and for not being the dad I expected. I forgive the mistakes you made."

However, according to Lily's Instagram feed, the two seem to be in a much better place today.

Having a famous dad isn't what Lily considers as a short form of success as she once revealed how she likes to keep her professional life separate from her real life.

"It was out of the question that people would think that I use a free pass thanks to my name," "I'm proud of my dad, but I wanted to be me, not just his daughter. For that, I was ready to wait to break through."

Phil Is A Proud Father

Lily also told the Radio Times that she would "stay away" from becoming the lead in a biopic about her father because she didn't want to mix her personal and professional lives. The actress would prefer to separate those aspects of her life. However, she added that her father is always "very proud" and "truly excited" whenever she gets cast in a new show.

Finding Peace And Moving On

Collins is enjoying a fruitful career, has been nominated for a Golden Globe, and has starred in several great films, including Tolkien. But only after she takes the required measures to forgive her father can she find peace inside herself and begin the actual healing.

These actions included admitting her suffering and her father's errors. Collin's relationship with her father started to improve gradually but certainly. She went a step further and decided to wish him a happy 67th birthday on Instagram to show her love for him.
