It’s never easy to be the center of attention, especially during an unfortunate incident. This is rather difficult for star kids who are often the focus of the media when their parents get divorced.
Such is the story of Arnold Schwarzenegger, his ex-wife Maria Shriver, and their oldest daughter Katherine Schwarzenegger.
Being the oldest, she was often harassed by the media for comments about her parent’s divorce. Considering she was just 21 years old, she wanted nothing more than to protect her peace during the trying time for her family. As a result, she decided to go far away while the drama unfolded elsewhere.
In May 2011, Katherine Schwarzenegger went away to London and realized the chaos was back in her hometown and it wasn’t following her globally.
"I just kind of wanted to go away and realize that it's not as big a deal in other places.”
Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s divorce was finalized in 2021, ten years after it was filed. Hence, over the past ten years, Katherine Schwarzenegger has avoided commenting, reading gossip, or giving in to any form of argument.
"I see them, but I choose not to read the stories because I figure whether it's true or not, I don't need to. I just focus on my family and everyone being okay instead of following the gossip."
The couple were together for 25 years and have four children together. However, in May 2011, news about Schwarzenegger’s affair with their former housekeeper surfaced. Not only was there an affair, but he had a son with their housekeeper, Joseph Baena.
Once it was publicly revealed, The Austrian Oak gave a statement where he publicly apologized to his family.
“I understand and deserve the feelings of anger and disappointment among my friends and family. There are no excuses and I take full responsibility for the hurt I have caused. I have apologized to Maria, my children and my family. I am truly sorry.”
When Joseph Baena was 13 years old, his mother finally revealed who his father was. Of course, life changed for him thereafter.
He recalled that his mother pulled him out of class as the whole world started to discover her affair with California’s Former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
“I was in the eighth grade. Fifth or sixth period. And I get called out of class to leave. And my mom’s there, and she’s like, ‘We gotta go—everyone is finding out about you and who your father is’.”
It took time for the father and son to develop a relationship. It’s not the easiest to find out that a famous Hollywood actor and the god of bodybuilding is your father.
Today, Joseph Baena has formed a relationship with his father and a beautiful friendship. Arnold Schwarzenegger has tried to actively be a part of his son’s life, taking interest in his relationships, and career, and guiding him the best a father can!
