Remote work is the future. It means not having to get yourself ready to drive a half hour (or more) to an office, just to sit around for 8 hours before getting ready to get back home. Sure, it means less social interaction with your coworkers, but it also means saving on a lot of time.

One TikTok user pointed out how little work we actually do during the workday, which is all the more obvious when we have less of the distractions in the office. The user who goes by Grump Mugs (@innergrump) wonders why we continue with the 8-hour work day in the first place.

In A Viral TikTok, The User Wondered Why Remote Workers Have To Work So Long.

Many of the Grump Mugs TikToks follow the format of text on the screen overtop video of the user sipping from a mug while looking annoyed. In this video, she holds her mug as the text overlay reads, "Why is no one talking about the fact that an 8 hour workday in the office does not equal an 8 hour workday at home?

"Like, we're taking away office conversations, long lunches, constantly being pulled away, less sleep, being drained from the commute, etc.. I can get an 8 hour office day done in 4 focused hours at home. So why are we still working 8?"

The user raises a lot of issues, such as how easy it can be to get distracted while in an office (something nobody really talks about).

Many Commenters Agreed With The User's Points.

Some suggested that we might be able to get away with working less if we shortened the workday, but others worried that it would mean getting paid less, too.

Other Users Mentioned That They Get Their Work Done Pretty Quickly.

Plenty of users in the comments agreed that they can get their daily work done quickly and end up spending the rest of the day just "pretending to work" as the TikToker said.

One user pointed out how the 8-hour workday has been around for a hundred years, referring to how it was popularized by Henry Ford in the 1920s.

In the last century since we adapted to the 40-hour work week, labor laws haven't changed that much. Perhaps, as many users pointed out, it might be time for an update.
