When I go out to eat, I want to make sure I'm the best customer possible. I just think it's only fair to be kind to the people who are waiting on you and your table. I'd sooner let hot broccoli cheddar soup spill all over my white sweater than not tip a server.

In an effort to be the best guest, I like to stack my dishes to make cleaning up easier. Last week, a server went viral for saying that wasn't helpful. Now, a former dishwasher is going on record to say that it is.

Let's take a deep dive, shall we?

Towards the end of last year, a video of a server asking people to stop stacking their dirty dishes went viral.

“I know you think you’re helping when you do this, but please [explective] stop doing this," user @porcupinejones can be heard saying as they unstack condiment ramekins. The video's comments eventually got turned off after people began weighing in.

Now, a former dishwasher is giving his two cents.

In a video response to the original viral TikTok, user @livewire0163 weighs in on the debate saying that it actually makes a lot of sense to stack dishes.

“As a former dishwasher, please keep doing all that,” he begins.

His justification was simple — it's helpful, and someone else will have to do it if you don't. "Keep stacking them," he tells the camera.

"I’ll put it into perspective. When you leave a restaurant, whatever server you have or whatever busser is coming to clear off that table is just going to stack the dishes anyway."

People in the comments were quick to weigh in.

"Stacking plates and ramekins are very different. Don’t stack your ramekins stack everything else. When you stock ramekins it gets on our hands," said one server.

"I think the server in the video meant specifically the little ramies not the rest of the plates. She has to separate those, so you don’t have to," said another.

However, it seems for the most part that people agreed stacking plates is always the best call.

"as a dishwasher once. it makes it so much easier. i remember i’d tell everyone 'just stack it all and i’ll get to it in a moment'" commented a fellow former dishwasher.

Ive always said that; I was a dishwasher for two restaurants at the same time!" said another.

Well look at that — you learn something new every day!
