Those who grew up in difficult situations can often discover the intensity of what they went through from the reactions of the people they tell their stories to.
After all, it’s very possible to get used to circumstances that would horrify others because we were exposed to them at a young age. This goes double if everyone around us at the time also didn’t react like anything out of the ordinary was happening.

But while this is something that people can spend a lifetime dealing with, it’s also possible to experience this realization on a much smaller, more fleeting scale. For instance, we can take a photo next to something incredibly dangerous and not realize it until months, if not years later.
It’s hard to express that resulting discomfort in picture form, but these images are probably the closest we can get.
While it’s not unusual for hunters and foresters to collect animal skulls, there’s something eerie about seeing them piled on top of each other like this.
And the fact that they’re all sitting in what looks like a cookie jar adds an extra layer of unease to the whole scene.
I love a good cookout, but there are a lot of reasons I can think of not to attend this one.
Honestly, the fact that the grillmaster here is dressed like the Johnny Depp version of Willy Wonka isn’t even close to the biggest one.

Seeing eyes glow in the backyard at night is rarely comforting, but that creepy feeling increases exponentially when there are as many as we see here.
It’s hard to tell where this was taken, but if an alligator convention is what Floridians can expect to see out the window every now and then, it’s no wonder that Florida Man also seems so upset.
This is not a sight that anyone wants to see in their house, but at least we can know the reason why it’s happening.
And fortunately, that’s not because it’s filled to the brim with wasps or spiders. When water seeps in between the paint and the actual ceiling, this drooping mess can often occur.
There are a lot of messed up telephones poles in this world, but it’s hard to tell how this one even got like this.
Normally, we might expect to hear that a car crashed into it, but the weird bend in it seems a lot higher up than that would suggest.
Did a tank collide with it or something?
If “Jaws” made people afraid to go in the water for a while, I can only imagine how this mid-swim discovery would make someone feel.
Sure, the sea is the home of jellyfish and seeing them isn’t normally that big of a surprise, but they’re not usually this massive.
I’m also not sure that touching it like this is such a great idea.
It seems that when we see a tunnel like this, we’re either enticed to explore it or we’d have to be dragged kicking and screaming into it.
When one is this dark and it’s so apparent that anything or anyone could be lurking inside of it, exploring it seems like a risky move.
Before anyone gets too excited, there’s a strange cottage industry for selling supposedly haunted dolls on the internet.
But even if its eerie appearance wasn’t enough of a deal-breaker, that casual aside that it’s “talkative at night” definitely seems like a cause for concern.
A lot of people have picked up sand dollars on the beach, but there’s something that they might not realize about them.
Namely, that they were once alive and these holes in their bodies tend to open and close as they move.
This ironing board probably seems perfectly normal until someone has to prop it up to clear some room.
Whether you found The Nun scary or not, it’s a lot easier to prepare for a jump scare in a movie than for one in real life.
At first glance, this seems like a perfectly fun walk down the toy aisle.
However, if one were to admire the scooters for a little too long, they might realize they were sharing this space with a particularly large spider.
And according to the uploader, no, that isn’t made of rubber. It’s real.
This person and this parrot probably look just fine on their own, but something happens when you put them together.
There’s just enough skin around the parrot’s eye to make it look like we’re somehow looking at its owner’s eye and that illusion is a little mind-bending.
The scene we’re looking at here was very likely Photoshopped in, but it’s here because a lot of it have thought we’ve seen something like it at night.
For some, it’s the demon they see when they experience sleep paralysis, but it also bears a strong resemblance to what I used to think would attack me as soon as I went to sleep as a kid.
Add a wide-brimmed hat and a very large knife and you’ve got the spitting image of what I imagined. Unsurprisingly, I didn’t often sleep easily as a kid.
I’m not sure if the image on this TV gets any better in context, but it definitely looks weird right now.
Suddenly, I can appreciate every weird look and concerned “what are you watching” my parents used to give me when they came into my room.
Sometimes, the scary part isn’t something intruding on a situation, but how you can see it unfolding.
Everything about what this man is doing is so anxiety-inducing that even my untrained self would be happy to help just so he stays out of this position.
There’s nothing necessarily wrong with what’s happening in this tree, but it would still be a creepy sight for a lot of people.
If you can’t put your finger on what’s unusual about this tree, it’s that it’s absolutely covered in sleeping bats.
It’s a festival of rabies shots waiting to happen.
The reason to be uneasy about this photograph is subtle, but you might catch a glimpse of it if to look to the left.
Fortunately, those aren’t glowing eyes, but rather lights. Still, the uploader admits that seeing them “gets [them] every time.”
Even at the best of times, this is exactly what someone sitting in a bathroom stall doesn’t want to experience.
However, there’s no way what we can describe what we’re seeing in this picture as “the best of times.”
I wouldn’t have thought it was possible for water bottle caps to make such creepy shadows, but light can do some bizarre things sometimes.
