In 2020, she lost her ex-husband, Eddie Van Halen, at the age of 65 to cancer. The pair were married from 1981 to 2007, and they had one son together named Wolfgang.

Eddie's death was really hard on Valerie, who wrote about him in her book, 'Enough Already: Learning to Love the Way I Am Today.'

She detailed that while there was a lot of love there, they also "went through a lot of hell as well."

"We weren't really good to each other at a lot of points in our lives because we met so young and were very immature," she wrote.

"But I'm so happy that we were able to come to a beautiful place by the end of his life. I wish he was still here."

Although they both went on to marry other people, Valerie always believed that she and Eddie were soulmates.

"The love we have always had for each other proved stronger and more resilient than anything else. We chose to remain friends and family."

Following Eddie's death, Valerie endured the coronavirus pandemic and another divorce.

She and her husband of 10 years, Tom Vitale, split this past May. The breakup has been hard on the star, who told Today that she has no plans to remarry.

"I can't imagine ever trusting anyone again to let into my life. So I have some trust issues that I'm sure I'm going to have to get past," Bertinelli said.

All of this stress has taken a toll on the 'Food Network' star's body.

In a new interview with Today with Hoda & Jenna, she shared that she must get her mental health together.

This way, her physical health can also improve.

"I haven't stepped on the scale since I finished writing the book," she got emotional while discussing her memoir Enough Already. She added that she's focusing on grace instead of judging herself.

"I know that I'm still holding on to this weight because it's protecting me," she continued.

"Because I'm going through a lot of challenges, a lot of heartbreak, a lot of crazy stuff going on in my life right now," she said.

She explained that she will only make progress with her weight once she gets her mind right.

"I know this weight is protecting me right now, and when I get healthier internally and emotionally that weight will come off," she said.

"Because I know I'm treating my body better," she added.

This includes drinking less alcohol, eating less sugar, as well as putting more vegetables into her body. "But my body is doing this for a reason … because it needs protection."

Bertinelli knows that she's not the only one going through these challenges.

"I'm not here to say, 'oh, poor me.' I'm here to say that when we reach out to people we love, or strangers even, that we don't have to feel so alone in this world and go through it alone."
