The Dodo says Coby the dog was brought to Fairfield County Shelter in South Carolina in late November. Coby was freaking out, as one shelter worker noted. “He is scared out of his mind … almost like a feral dog would be … but not once did he growl, or try to bite,” said Samira El-Hage.
“He wanted to hide under the raised bed or run away when we got outside. He kept trying to chew the leash and would not look at us," she told the Dodo. “He just stands in that corner facing the wall," she added.
Leigh Maddox is founder of Compassion For Cats of Delaware. Maddox heard about Coby's plight and was horrified. “He tugged at my heartstrings and I instantly knew we had to pull him from the shelter," Maddox said, according to the Dodo. Maddox was able to bring Coby to meet his future foster mom, by organizing the shelter group Pilots N Paws to bring him to his new home in Dover, Delaware.
New owner Olivia Fritz says Coby is still really shy, and that it will take a while until he's out of his shell completely. "He was so shut down that really he did not respond to anything or anyone," she said. But Coby seems to be learning to trust others finally, as Fritz posted video of Coby all excited and having some fun at home. “I hope the damage he suffered can be overcome, but it won't be overnight," Fritz said. We're hoping for a happy ending for Coby.
