The early '00s was a golden era for comedies. With films like Wedding Crashers, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, and Knocked Up, it isn't hard to understand why.

Among those proverbial giants stands yet another iconic Judd Apatow comedy — Forgetting Sarah Marshall. So in order to better appreciate it, here are 15 random facts about Forgetting Sarah Marshall that fans didn't know.

1. The naked breakup scene is based on real events.

"I once got dumped while I was naked," Jason explained to NPR. "But she asked me to put clothes on during this real breakup (my real-life breakup) and as opposed to in the movie when I say no, I did go to put clothes on."

2. The majority of the movie was filmed on location, at the Turtle Bay Resort in Oahu.

As fate would have it, the resort where Forgetting Sarah Marshall was filmed also appears in Adam Devine's Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates.

3. Jason Segel foretold the future in one memorable musical scene.

There's one scene in Forgetting Sarah Marshall where Peter begins playing the theme song for The Muppets Show. Three years later, he was cast in the rebooted movie version of The Muppets.

4. Although the film is credited as a Judd Apatow film, Jason Segel was the one who wrote the movie.

The iconic comedic filmmaker neither wrote nor directed Forgetting Sarah Marshall. He was signed on as a producer and that's it.

5. The state fish of Hawaii really is the Humuhumunukunukuapua'a.

Da'Vone McDonald's Dwayne is easily one of the more memorable supporting characters, and many in the audience couldn't help but laugh when he told Peter how he could name over 200 different types of fish. It turns out that Dwayne wasn't lying.

6. Mila Kunis severely injured herself on set.

"I've had so many injuries!" she told Fox News. "I actually ripped out a little piece of my neck off in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. It happened when we were in the water."

7. Jason Segel didn't tell his mother about his nude scene.

For some reason, Jason thought it would be hilarious for his mother to find out all on her own. Unfortunately for him, she didn't think it was very funny.

8. After arriving home, Jason's mom went straight to the computer to write her family an e-mail.

"'I would like to inform you all that Jason has chosen to do full-frontal nudity,'" his mother's e-mail began. "'However, it is not gratuitous and is essential to the plot,'" he told Vanity Fair.

9. A couple of strange coincidences took place while on set.

For instance, actress Kristen Bell found out that her long-running series Veronica Mars was canceled just one day before she was due to shoot the scene where Sarah Marshall is told the very same thing.

10. Mila Kunis originally had her eyes set on a former Judd Apatow classic.

Mila originally auditioned for the part of Allison in Knocked Up. Apatow decided to take things in a different direction but remembered Mila when the time came to begin casting for Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

11. Much of the film's music was written by a Grammy-winning Hawaiian musician.

Daniel Ho is an award-winning musician with more than 50 albums under his belt. He wrote much of the film's Hawaiian music, under the pseudonym The Coconutz.

11. Russell Brand's audition was totally ad-libbed and it's freaking hilarious.

Originally, the part of Aldous Snow was written to be much posher and toned down. However, once Jason Segel saw Russell's performance, he completely rewrote the character for him.

13. Mila Kunis did not get naked for the movie.

While speaking with BlackBook, director Nick Stoller confirmed that the photograph we see of a topless Mila Kunis was photoshopped. "I hope that doesn’t ruin a lot of people’s fantasies," he joked.

14. Cynthia Nixon makes a brief cameo in the film.

When Peter is sitting at the bar, drinking his pain away, he begins swilling a martini and doing his best Sex and the City impression. As soon as he says "Hi, Miranda," Cynthia walks right past him.

15. "Dracula's Lament" was written and inspired by Jason Segel's life.

"I came up with the conclusion that the way I was going to jump-start my career was with a lavish Dracula puppet musical," Segel said at New Yorker Festival. "I wrote the Dracula musical alone in my apartment and I recorded it.”
